Arts amdl Entertainment Live From New York - It’s Six New Cast Members! OCT. 17'27,2013 Hannah Nielson, staff writer Sept. 28 brought the 39th season of the heavily awarded and highly popular television show “Sat urday Night Live.” Tine Fey, SNL’s own veteran player and head writer, hosted the episode; Arcade Fire was the musical guest. Fey called this sea son “a rebuilding year” and so it will be. The episode presented six new feature players: Beck Bennett, Josh Milhiser, Kyle Mooney, Mike O’Brien, Noel Wells and Brooks Wheelan. These additions to the cast were des perately needed after the show’s cast suffered a mass exodus over theTas't' two years as favorites Bill Hader, Ja son Sudeikis, Fred Armisen, Seth My ers, Andy Samberg and Kristen Wiig all made their SNL exits. Hard-to-please viewers may be a little unsettled with how much younger these new cast members are. These newbies, however, are not totally without experience. Bennet, Mooney and Wells have all written and performed for the Upright Citi zens Brigade (UCB), a theater and training center for improvisation and sketch comedy. The UCB has pro- via ibtimes.com duced some of the greatest comedic writers and performers of our gen eration with credits such as “Parks and Recreation”, “30 Rock”, “The Of fice”, “The Colbert Report”, “Funny or Die” and more. Some of these new actors may already look familiar to you. Milhiser, Mooney, O’Brien and Wheelan have all made guest appear ances on television and all the new players (except for Brooks Wheelan) have grown to impressive popularity through YouTube sketches that they have written, directed and starred in themselves. These YouTube super- stars speak to the new way comedians in our generation are “making it” in their industry and how modern tech nology is helping them do it. Wells and Wheelan have both written and performed for College Humor, and Bennett can be seen in the AT&T “It’s Not Complicated” ad campaign. While these actors/comedians may be new to SNL, they are not totally new to the show’s viewers. In short, these six comedians may have some intimidating shoes to fill at SNL, but viewers can all look forward to seeing them rise to the oc casion. The Colton Review is now accepting submissions! Maitlyn Healy, sports and entertainment editor Ten down, three to go. We are now left with four teams and two division championship series before one team is crowned World Cham pion. The Boston Red Sox will face the Detroit Tigers in the American League Championship Series (ALCS), and the Los Angeles Dodgers will face the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS (the Dodgers and Cardinals were in this same posi tion in 1985, and the Cards took the series). Who will make it to the World Series, and who will be World Champion? The Boston Red Sox last appeared in the championship games when they won the World Series in 2007. Boston is not a team that people were expecting to make it this far in the playoffs this season, but there is no denying their pres ence (and their field of beards) now. But do they have what it takes to conquer the Detroit Tigers? The Detroit Tigers have proven them selves this season with powerhouses like Ver- lander. Fielder and Cabrera. The Tigers will want to hang on to this season for as long as possible because the end of this season possibly means the loss of their best pitcher, Max Scherzer. Because the Tigers have to pay their three aforementioned superstars, it is not likely that they will be able to come up with the $20 million for Scherzer’s contract. He is a free-agent this upcoming offseason, and Detroit will defi nitely miss him next season. Will Detroit be able to capitalize on Scherzer’s talents while they still have him and make it to the World Series? The Los Angeles Dodgers, owned by NBA hall of famer Magic Johnson, have had a tremendous season. Between their legendary manager Don Mattingly and their impressive list of All-Stars, the Dodgers, it seems, have a much better chance against the Cardinals than they did in 1985. The St. Louis Cardinals, on the other hand, have had a less-than-impressive season. The Cardinals are a young team and nearly lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates already in the playoffs. The Cards lost the series (4-3) against the Dodg ers during the regular season- can they ensure victory this time around? The ALCS series will begin on Oct. 12, and the NLCS series will begin on Oct. 11. The winners of these two series will start playing head-to-head in the World Series on Oct. 23. via sportsillustrated.cnn.com
