I™ HERALD March l8, 2015 Spring Break-More Like Spring Brigade Emily Chilton, Copy Editor While most people went on vacations or just hung around at home, a few Meredith Angels chose to spend their spring break on a medical brigade in Nicaragua. The trip was March 8-March 14 and the group was composed of 30 people from Meredith and NC State. Many in the group were pre-health care, and some were psych majors preparing for careers in occupational therapy. Naha Khan organized this trip, her last of three since she is a senior this year. She has been to Hondnras, Panama, and now Nicaragua. “She put so much effort into all of this and did everything before we left,” said sophomore Kelsey Wilson. “The people there welcomed us into their homes and were just genuinely happy to have us there. They were a lot different from people that I’ve experienced here,” said Wilson. “Our group meshed well, and every person worked really hard and loved it just as much as I did!” Wilson is a biology and public health major at Meredith. The first day, the group packed medicine and observed a public health brigade building a house and a few outhouses in the town. The rest of the week they worked to give help and medicine to those who needed it, with the assistance of three local doctors and one ER doctor from Duke. The group saw 793 consults over the course of the week. “We were able to supply every person that came with parasite medicine, and a lot of them needed it immediately for themselves,” said Wilson. They operated a pharmacy out of a local woman’s house and also had a dental station set up for the people. “We educated kids on how to brush their teeth to prevent cavities, and then we ended up just pla3dng with them!” said Wilson. “We all had a great time.” Cllnica Los RoMes/IK/li '^S Salud PrewMtiva photos via Emily Chilton STAFF Editors: Julia Dent, Editor in Chief.
