News Meredith to Host “Living Legend” Cokie Roberts Nancy Merritt, Contributing Writer via NPR.org On May 8, Meredith College will host nationally recognized journalist, political ana lyst, and New York Times bestselling author Cokie Roberts. As an accomplished woman who has spent much of her life advocating for women’s education, her countless awards and extensive experience in broadcasting speak to her success. Throughout her career, she has worked as a correspondent for ABC News, NPR and CBS, and she has co-anchored the popu lar weekly interview program This Week on ABC. In addition, she holds more than twenty honorary degrees and has received some of the highest honors in broadcast media. In 2008, the Library of Congress honored Roberts as a “Living Legend,” a remarkable accomplish ment for anyone, especially for a woman who grew up in a time where women were severely limited in the workplace. Roberts also truly understands the value of single-sex educational institutions. Before she began her career as a respected journalist, Roberts attended three women’s schools - the Academy of the Sacred Heart, in New Orleans; Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, in Maryland and Wellesley College, where she received her degree in Political Sci ence. She addressed the topic of single-sex ed ucation during a Q&A in 1998, sa3dng that “in fact, much to my surprise, we find that most of the high-achieving women went to women’s schools” despite the popularity of coed schools in the 20th century. She also added, “It’s not just the Seven Sisters schools that produce suc cessful women” because “many of the women in Congress went to small. Catholic women’s colleges and received both a fine education and the special sense of achievement that those schools provide.” This event is part of a national tour to publicize her new book Capital Dames: The Civil War and the Women of Washington, which provides a compelling and inspiring look at the newfound independence and politi cal empowerment of women in Washington during the Civil War. If you are interested in attending this event, tickets are available for $5, or for free with the purchase of Capital Dames from Quail Ridge Books and Music. The event will be held in Jones Auditorium on May 8 at 7 p.m. Digital Media Convergence Puts the Fun in Functional Kristen Rivera, Contributing Writer This spring, the Communication Department introduced a new course to its repertoire- Digital Media Convergence. As the first of its kind to take place in the Harris computer lab, the course draws on new media writing, web design, and video production to craft aesthetically pleasing yet fully functional media. According to Professor Alan Buck, the Communication staff member teaching the Digital Media class, the course has covered “videography and editing, web design, social media, and media management,” and students will “produce the above media for a predetermined non-profit that can benefit from such services.” This non-profit is Meredith College’s own chapter of Campus Kitchens. Students will build their professional portfolios with the web and video content they produce for the organization. “Employees today are expected to have an understanding of all aspects of interactive media,” says Professor Buck. “Gone are the days where individuals are hired based on a single, specific media skill.” Professor Buck is a graduate of the Interactive Media Master’s program at Elon University and has built websites and produced video content for non profits and large businesses alike. “My hope is that students will learn about interactive media in a hands-on environment [and] have fun while doing so,” he says. Currently, the class is only offered as a special topics course in communication, but Professor Buck hopes that more students will express interest in this dynamic and exhilarating field. “I love that Meredith has recognized the fast changing world of media and the skills needed to succeed,” he says. The creative and technical skills current students are learning are placing them above their professional competitors. In other words, as Professor Buck puts it, “it's a good time to be a communications student!” “Cards Against Humanity” Helps Humanity Kristen Lawhorne, Staff Writer via Cards Against Humanity Recently, Cards Against Humanity unveiled a new science pack for their card game. They plan to use all proceeds to create the Cards Against Humanity Scholarship, which helps women in college. The scholarship was created to help women majoring in science, technology, engineering and various other science related majors. The scholarship provides the recipient with a full ride through college. The press release goes on to mention that the non-profit foundation has helped raise about 2 million dollars and “has funded over 12,500 teacher projects.” Being able to gather so much money and then using it to help others is rare for companies. According to a press release, the co-creator of Cards Against Humanity Josh Dillon says, “Women are underrepresented in science, tech, engineering, and math, and we felt like the funding from this pack could [...] [make] it possible for more women to get an education in those fields.” Men outnumber women in the science and math fields, so Dillon and his company want to see an increase in women in science. The best way to do that is to help ivith their education. The press release gives living proof that women can work in the science field. Veronica Berns, PhD is the Science Ambassador of the Scholarship board. Berns wants everyone who loves science to know that, “what you are doing and dreaming is really great, [the scholarship was created] help to [you] get you where you want to go. Don’t let others dictate your future; continue to stand strong.” Applications ivill be available in the fall of 2016. For the scholarship go here: http: / / www.scienceambassadorscholarship. com/
