Editorials Big Sis/Lil Sis: The Big Reveal Katherine Soost As the first few weeks of school have passed, students have found their groove as they learn their class sched ule (how late can you wake up and still get to class on time?), get to know new professors and classmates, and get used to all the other adjustments that come with a new semester. For the class of 2019, these few weeks have, been a time of learning and growing as they adjust to being on their own for the first time, managing their own sched ules and free time, and experiencing all that Meredith has to offer. For their “big sis” class, the class of 2017, these first few weeks are not all that differ ent from previous years, although it is not uncommon to hear a junior say, "Wait, I’m not a freshman anymore?” A few big sis/lil sis pairs offer some perspective on what their time at Mer edith has been like so far, whether it be a few weeks or a few years. When Kayla Hansen, ’19, walked on campus, she immediately found a strong sup port system through her student and faculty advisors as well as her big sis, and she notes that this support system “was such a blessing and showed me that Meredith is the right place for me to be.” Meanwhile, Faith Faison, ’19, has found Meredith to be “a great ad venture,” and she is looking forward to continuing the adventure by expe riencing Cornhuskin’ and Stunt in the coming year. Her big sis, Elizabeth Charette, says that Cornhuskin is one of her favorite traditions, as “You re ally get to come together as a class and a school and just have fun!” Freshman Sarah Kiser notes that she is “really looking forward to the opportunity of being a leader,” a sentiment her big sis, Laura Culpepper, certainly echoes. A future elementary school teacher, Culpepper has loved the opportunities she has had “to explore the education field and discover who I am as a fu ture teacher.” As the semester contin ues, it is clear these bigs and lils have a strong start that will guide them through these months. The 2015 VMAs featuring Miley Cyrus Meredith Hacks: All About Printing Bryana Woods Did you happen to miss the VMAs or rather the Miley Cyrus show when it aired on August 30th? Well let me be the first to tell you, you didn’t miss much, unless of course you’re on the Miley, Nicki, Kanye, or Taylor band wagon. The show started off simple enough with a mind-blowing performance by Nicki Minaj singing “Trini Dem Girls” and “The Night Is Still Young” from her latest album the Pink Print. While singing “The Night Is Still Young” she was joined by the one and only Tay- Swift and the song quickly flowed into a beautiful duet with them sing ing “Bad Blood”, one of Taylor’s latest hits. I’m sure the duet only happened because it was a clever way to tell the press and the people that the brief Twitter war between the two was over and they were back on good terms. During the show the host Miley Cyrus emerged in many colorful, yet outrageous, outfit changes. Her out fits ranged from almost naked to a cardboard painted rainbow to a dress that she wore in her performance of her new song “Dooo It!” that was spandex pink, incredibly tight and had “do it” on the front in what looked to be balloons. The one to remember though was a bad interpretation of a 60s dress with cutouts and pom pom embroidering. I doubt you could even call what she wore a dress but hey, to each her own. There can be no VMAs without the man himself, Kanye West who accept ed the Michael Jackson Video Van guard Award from, that’s right; you guessed it, Taylor Swift. But do you remember in 2009 the incident that happened between Kanye and Taylor while she was accepting the award for Best Female Video? No? Neither do I. Kanye accepted the award and went on with a rather unusual speech. Not amusing, like most of the artists that night, but rather serious and eye opening into the mind of Kanye, but the one thing he said that the watch ers and world will surely remember, “ ...I have decided, in 2020, to run for president.” Yikes! Where’s the drama? Well the drama came when Nicki Minaj accepted the Best Hip-Hop Video Award for Ana conda. She did the spiel that all stars do, but added a little something extra when she thanked her Pastor then turned right around and called out Miley Cyrus saying, “Miley, what’s good?” in reference to an interview she did earlier in the month saying some not-so-nice things to say about Nicki. Miley brushed off Nicki’s com ments and kept on moving with the show. Will there be beef between two? It’s hard to say, but stay tuned. Ashley-Rosetta Hall We’ve all been there, whether you are the super prepared student who remembers to print her completed assignments at least 24 hours in advance, or maybe you prefer the “Mission-Impossible” style tension of printing your work fifteen minutes before class...reguardless, the campus printers aren’t working, or there is a huge line. No worries, you came pre pared; you already have a printer in your room. But a byzantine error mes sage on your screen is preventing you from printing that research paper/ math hornework/thesis, and natural ly you begin lamenting technology’s seemingly clairvoyant penchant for picking just the right moment to ruin your academic life. Don’t panic, this article will help you to know whether or not a solution is just a few clicks away, and when it’s time to call for help. Printer Paused: When your print er is paused that mean that somehow it’s been set to stay inactive until you unpause your printer. The way to un pause your printer is to find and click your printer icon. Then look at the left hand corner of the popup window, click “Printer” and go down to the fourth option titled “Pause Printing” and click. Now your printer will work for you again! Printer not connected to WiF: Your printer is in working order and you’ve press print. You get a mes sage telling you the printer is not con nected to the campus WiFi. What do you do? Breathe and go to the printer, press your power button, and make sure you are on the wireless network for faculty/staff, and students, titled “Meredith2009-10.” If the printer, tablet, or smartphone you are trying to print from happens to be oil the “Mer edith-Public” wireless network, you won’t be able to print. To change your printer’s wireless setting either press the “Wireless button” (it may also be under “Preferences” or “Wireless” de pending on the brand). From there, you search the listed WiFi networks (careful not to attach your printer to someone else’s!), find the Meredith WiFi and set your printer to it. If all else fails, look for a USB connection on the back of your printer and plug your computer and printer together to print. Meredith printer gives a weird error: So you’ve decided to use the Meredith printers, and you’ve re ceived an error message that you don’t understand? Now it’s time to make your way to Tech Services. You can find them behind Belk Dining Hall. I hope this article helps you keep your cool while “Going Strong” this academic year. Trump Insults Entire Meredith Student Body Alexa lanuale With the 2016 presidential election quickly approaching there are quite a few surprising candidates. One snch is the famous multi billionaire, Donald Trump. Trump is not only known for his real estate endeavors and televi sion series The Apprentice; he is also known for his problematic and con troversial remarks regarding subjects such as immigration, sexual assault in the military, same-sex marriage, poverty and much more. One subject Trump seems to consistently com ment on with both distaste and insult is women. One pattern that can be seen in Trump’s statements made towards women is the over-sexualizing of them. When it comes to his television series The Apprentice, Trump stated that the only way his female contestants were able to come out on top was due to their sex appeal alone. In his 2004 book titled How to Get Rich Trump states, “It’s certainly not groundbreak ing news that the early victories by the women on ‘The Apprentice’ were, to a very large extent, dependent on their sex appeal.” He has even gone as far as commenting on the physical ap pearance of his own daughter Ivanka Trump. After stating that his young daughter would probably not pose for Playboy despite her “very nice figure,” Trump went on to say, “I’ve said if Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her.” During an interview with a female reporter Trump empha sized that although many try to state otherwise, physical appearance truly matters especially in certain careers. Trump tried providing an example for the female reporter by stating, “You wouldn’t have your job if you weren’t beautiful.” Along with making statements about women being not much more than their looks and sexiness. Trump has also made statements in defense of and making light of sexual assault. When news broke out about the large amount of unreported sexual assaults in the military and the small amount of convictions Trump stated in a tweet, “What did these geniuses ex pect when they put men and women together?” With recent accusations by Trump stating that Mexican immi grants crossing the border are bring ing “crime” and “drugs” into the coun try while “raping our women” it has been brought to the media’s attention that Trump himself has been accused of rape by none other than his ex-wife Ivana Trump. Ivana Trump stated that she felt “violated” during a sexual encounter with her ex-husband and had referred to the violent act as rape when confiding in friends but not in the “criminal sense.” With Donald Trump miraculously becoming the frontrunner for the GOP in this year’s Presidential election, it is necessary to know his stance on not only political issues, but social ones as well. Being that most students at tending Meredith College are women of legal voting age it is important to know the candidates and their views on women’s rights and the inequali ties we face in our everyday lives. Those with “conservative” political views may agree with those of Don ald Trump but it is apparent that the safety and equality of women and mi norities is not exactly a main priority of this Presidential candidate.
