Arts & Entertainment Volleyball Fights for First; Soccer Kicks Cancer Julia Allsbrook, Staff Writer On Wednesday Oct. 7, the Avenging Angel volleyball team went five sets with conference opponent, Averett. Averett was leading the conference with a 7-0 record until the Angels sought victoiy Wednesday night. Lasting five sets, the match’s momentum bounced back and forth between both teams. The Cougars won game one 25-15 as the Angels’ defense had trouble breaking the Cougars’ serve. However, game two went to the Angels 25-23 due to key blocking at the net by both Alex Hafliger and Katie Keen. The Angels lost the third set, but recovered in the fourth, pushing the match into a fifth set. The final set was a nail biter as both teams battled back and forth closely for each point. With help from the seventh man in the stands, the angels pulled out a 16-14 win in the fifth match. “Tonight was a full team effort,” Coach Fiona Barkley said. “It took our defense to settle down to give us the opportunity to run our offense.” The Angels are now leading the conference with a 9-1 record. Their next match is scheduled for Tuesday Oct. 13 at Ferrum. The soccer team is currently 7-0 in the conference after traveling to Piedmont over fall break. Despite the fact that the very last night of October is said to be the night where the dead can roam the earth, many believe that this is possible any night; and what better way to ready oneself for Halloween night than to search for ghosts and spirits during the nights leading up to it? It just so happens there are many haunted places within the Triangle that are waiting for all who love' a good scare. Here in Raleigh, located on 165 Mimosa Street, sits the Mordecai House. The house is said to be haunted by Mary Willis Mordecai Turk, who can be seen as an apparition in a grey period dress playing the piano or as a mist that hovers over the piano. Right up the street from our school is another apparently haunted location, otherwise known as North Carolina State University. N.C. State apparently has a ghostly visitor from time to time at the Bell Tower, who was once a construction worker near the site. For those who are willing to make a tiny trip out of it. Chapel Hill also has multiple haunted sites. At the Horace Williams House, located at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, the former resident and Philosophy Department chairman can supposedly be spotted rocking a rocking chair, moving objects and flushing toilets. One of the most haunted locations that can be found in the triangle, which has reportedly over twenty ghosts inhabiting its rooms, is the Carolina Inn located in Chapel Hill. The most notorious ghost that guests of the hotel have been startled by is that of Dr. William Jacocks, who apparently made Room 256 his place of residence before passing away. The Inn has apparently made renovations in hopes to stop some of the pranks made by Jacocks and other ghosts that haunt the building, but if you are a guest who is having trouble with the locks on your doors and just so happen to see an apparition of a well-dressed man accompanied by the scent of flowers, you are more than likely taking part in a ghostly encounter with none other than William Jacocks. Although going out in search of the truth behind ghost stories may be fun, make sure that when you are visiting these haunted locations you get permission if necessary and also keep your safety and wellbeing as your main priority. Be careful; and happy ghost hunting! #MCEnglishWeek15 Monday, October 12th 9 AM Joyner Hallway Book exchange begins Colton Fundraiser begins 5-6 PM Lower Belk Career and Internship Gathering Tuesday, October 13th 7-8 PM Cate, 2nd Floor Lite Live! But, did you know that the center of arts at Meredith College is sponsoring a trip to the epicenter of the arts in the US? That’s right, some people from the art department of Meredith are going to New York City and visiting a whole slew of museums from Nov. 20-22, 2015. This trip includes a round trip plane ticket, coach bus transfer, two nights at a Manhattan hotel, and numerous museum and gallery admissions in and around New York. The price ranges from $500 to $850 depending on the chosen package. This will be a wonderful experience for the women going on the trip, and we can’t wait to hear from them!
