GEORGE GRIFFITH died in early October and left many grieving friends. He was a warm,
affectionate and humorous man. In our minds he is striding down the beach, the old
Coast Guard cap pulled low, and his pipe burning upside down, his beautiful red
setter, Kelly, gamboling at his heels,

VI and DON FIORINI are new neighbors on White Ash Drive. They*ve been living in
Sanford, N, C, but have lived all over the country over the years Don was with Sears,
He and his wife's brothers run the Squatters* Campsite, store and service station in
Salter Path; VI is originally from Salter Path, and Don from Pennsylvania, They
met when he was a Marine down here, Don also works with Investors* Diversified
Services. They has two childrens Cynthia, 23, in Tampa, Florida, and Mike, 20, in
Carolina Beach, N, C, There is a pleasant poodle girl named Christy as well,
HELP! HELP LINE, the telephone ccmiseling service that works out of Beacon House Drug
Abuse Center, 1201 Evans St., in Morehead, needs volunteers to talk with people who
are in emotional stress — volunteers who are warm, caring, and sensitive - if you
have some hours you could spend comforting and consoling, please call DAVID MAY, new
Beacon House Director - 726-7^^9, and set up a little interview with himj then start
training sessions as soon as you can, (They are currently being held on Monday
nights from 8 to 10 — check on the place when you talk with David), You know how
great you feel when you have listened to a friend and offered him solace? You'll
get the same feeling as you talk with strangers in distress,

Some baby sea turtles hatched themselves into the cold and cruel world the other
day down below the Mimosa Beach steps. They would have been pretty stranded up on
the high sands there, but some kindly residents carried a bunch of them to the water
and felt that somehow the little creatures might make it from then on,

At the Board of Commissioners Meeting for October constituents offered a standing
ovation to the three Commissioners who, at that time, had already decided not to
run for office a second time. They were the Mayor, JAMES REDFIELD, SIMON BEZUYEN,
and WAIGHTSEL HICKS, who made formal farewell statements,
LT, COL. ROBERT 0*NEAL, town director of Civil preparedness, told the Board that the
recent hurricane alert had given his group a good rehearsal for the real thing and
that all systems had been "GO" throughout the emergency period. He also reported
on his attendance at the N, C, Civil Preparedness Association meeting Sept, l^~l6 at
High Point,
The Board voted to notify Bogue Enterprises Ltd, that the Town would accept Tee Court
and Oakleaf Drive into the town road system as soon as they were repaired. The roads
need some patching and fill work before they can be accepted.
They also voted to post signs warning motorists that speed is checked by radar now,
as our Police Department has obtained a radar unit through the Governor's Highway
Safety Council, (By the way - 25 MPH signs axe now posted throughout the town.)

At a public hearing on October 22 the Board tabled consideration of a group of ordi
nances aimed at regulating traffic on town waterways. They instructed the Committee
responsible for drawing up the ordinances to meet with the Waterways Committee of
the Pine Knoll Association, our landowners group, in order to determine a method of
regulating Ixaffice on the canals where we have had recurring problems with too much
wake and traffic moving too fast for safety,

PINE KNOLL SHORES GARDEN CLUB: ELIZABETH AMES, DORTHA HALL, NEWELL HALLER, MABEL
HE14PHILL, and GERT WARNER represented our Garden Club at the annual meeting of Dis
trict XI in New Bern recently. It was a day long affair, beginning with a coffee
hour, reports from Club presidents and the State President, Our club was compli
mented on its litter program and its fine year book. The club also received the
Garden Club of North Carolina Membership certificate. After lunch there was a
demonstration of the art of Japanese flower arranging by Mrs, Frank Farmer, Kinston
Garden Club, Instructor, Master Judge, and Member of Ikebana International,
last year at Christmas the PKS Garden Club was responsible for the lighting of 930
Gandies in their local luminaria project; this year they hope to brighten our
sticeets with at least 1200 as they launch their push to have everyone light up the
area, as a symbol of the bonfires the shepherds built to light their way to the
