The Library Happenings for January Closing. The Bogue Banks Public Library will be closed on Monday, January 1, for New Years Day. Book exchange and sale. Stop by the paperback Book Exchange and trade for a free paperback book. The Book Nook is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with over 3,000 books for sale. • Silent auction. Be sure to check out the ongoing silent auction; new items are added frequently. Activities for children. Preschool Storytime for ages 3-5 is held each Thursday at 10 a.m. with Ms. Brita. . Thursday, January 4, will be “Birds of a Feather.” (January 5 is National Bird Day.) • Thursday, January 11, will be “Winter Wonderland.” • Thursday, January 18, will be “Cabin Fever.” • Thursday, January 25, will be “Book Blitz.” Featured artwork. During the month of January, the art gallery will feature the watercolorS of Indian Beach resident Janet Wiley. Ms. Wiley attended high school in Raleigh and graduated from the University of North Carolina—Greensboro with a master s degree in fine art. She taught at Potsdam State University of New York. Ms. Wiley has lived in Indian Beach since 1997, raising four daughters as well as continuing to pursue her interest in art. She has painted in oils, but has focused on watercolors, getting inspiration from nature. The showcases will display the pendants hand-stamped with alcohol ink made by Mandy Copp-Wilson. They are being sold wrapped in wire and on a chain. There wilLbe an artists reception on Friday, January 12, from 3 to 4 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and all are invited. 3^ ■■ , y- Pendants by Mandy Copp-Wilson- im Friends of the Library Annual Meeting By Barbara McCreary The public is invited to attend the annual meeting of the Friends of the Bogue Banks Public Library (FBBPL) on Sunday, January 28, at 3 p.m. Guest speaker Herb Stanford, a 1966 graduate of North Carolina State University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and the author of the popular book A Look at Carteret County, will be accompanied by local historian Rodney Kemp. In a question-answer format, Kemp and Stanford will discuss the research Stanford has been conducting about World War I for his upcoming book Carteret County in World War 1. According to FBBPL Vice President Stacey Veros, Stanford will discuss “ ‘the war to end all wars’ and what mistakes were made in the armistices to lay the groundwork for World War 11.” She also states that, “Things are so clear in retrospect, and Herb really has an uncanny memory of all the details he uncovered during his research on this subject.” Light refreshments will be served following the presentation, along with a book signing by the author. There will be a drawing for a door prize, and attendees will also have an opportunity to • bid on the current round of silent auction items, including a framed coastal photograph 'by landscape and nature artist Jody Merritt. Donations will be accepted at this free event that will fake place at the library, 320 Salter Path Road, with doors opening at 2:30 p.m. For further information, please contact the library at 247-4660.
