4 KpRNER Happy 2018, everyone. Next dinner with the mayor. On February 17 we will host our fourth dinner with the mayor outside of Carteret County. We started these a few years ago as an outreach tool to our second-home owners. We time this so that it takes place immediately following our annual Board of Commissioners off-site planning meeting, so it is a great way to be kept informed of where the town is focused in the new calendar year. The past three years we have had this dinner in the greater Raleigh area. This year we are targeting our 170-1- property owners who live in the greater Greenville-Kinston area. The dinner will be at the Skylight Inn BBQ in Ayden. Dinner details will be sent out via email, so if you are not signed up on the town email list, please request to be added as shown below. Pine Knoll Shores now requires that bags of household garbage be placed in containers. At the December board meeting the commissioners took action to require that bags of household garbage be placed in containers and not just left on the side of the road. Coyotes are feeding on these bags, and as we deal with the concerns of .coyotes in town, one of the most important recommendations from biologists with the NC Wildlife Resource Commission is that we remove food sources for these animals. Over the past decade we have established two convenient sites, one behind town hall and another at Lot C adjacent to the public safety building, to allow our second-home owners to drop off garbage and recycling prior to leaving town. Right of way tree trimming. By the time you are reading this, we will have started a tree-trimming project on the municipal roads here in town. We have plenty of areas in town where school bus and fire truck passage is becoming difficult, and the intent is to improve passage for public safety. We will use a skilled tree service contractor, and we are doing this in the dormant growing months. This will be a significant trimming, with the objective to clear an area 12 feet in height and generally six feet on either side of the asphalt. While we will not remove what are clearly ornamental plantings, we will trim back trees, branches, vines, etc., that present problems to these vehicles. A rule we will follow is if a school bus or fire truck is driving down the road and a car is coming the other way (causing the bus/truck to be on the far right side of the road/asphalt), we want the bus/truck to pass without hitting vegetation—and we will trim further back to ensure that we aren’t doing this again in 24 months. An alternative method to reach a Pine Knoll Shores police officer for non emergency situations. If you need to ask a question or simply pass along some information, please call the county communications center at 726-1911. You may then ask the attendant to have a police officer call you. Please remember that for any situation that actually involves suspected criminal activity or if you need a police officer to come to your location, you should call 911. It is critically important that when a law enforcement officer actually deploys to a scene he or she does so only after being centrally dispatched via the 911 system. Planning for the next year (and heyond). The annual Board of Commissioners off-site meeting will take place on February 8-9. This meeting is an open and public meeting and all are invited to attend. Call Town Clerk Sarah Williams for details. Potential insurance premium improvement. In April we received the good news that, effective August 1, our fire readiness rating from the NC Department of Insurance was improved. As of this writing. Pine Knoll Shores property owners insured by USAA and Nationwide have informed us that they will see reductions in insurance premiums due to this. No two policies are exactly alike, so everyone may not see the same impact on premiums (another property owner told us that they would not see a premium discount). Nonetheless, it might be worth everyone’s time to contact their insurer and inform them of this new rating. Town email list.
