FROM THE DESK OF THE POLICE CHIEF
Spring Update
By Ryan Thompson, Pine Knoll Shores Police Chief
Your Police Department staff has had a busy first few months
of the year. Our officers have traveled all over the state to attend
advanced training classes and seminars so that we can better
serve our residents and visitors. Three of our officers are attending
classes toward a professional certificate through the NC Justice
Academy. Officer Nancy Montanino is working toward her
Community Policing Certificate (400 hours), Corporal Joseph
Bishop is working toward his Criminal Investigations Certificate
(500 hours), and Corporal Jordan Seitter is working toward her
Tactical Certificate (500 hours). These professional certificates are
exceptionally difficult to achieve and require dedication from our
officers to earn them. In the photo below. Officer Montanino is
pictured in a recent course entitled “Officer Safety and Readiness
Training” at the NC Justice Academy in Salemburg.

We also have four officers who are attending college and
working on various degrees. Corporal Seitter is attending Carteret
Community College and working on an associates degree in
Criminal Justice, Officer Joseph Patton is attending Craven
Community College and working on an associates degree in
Science (meteorology). Corporal Bishop is attending Southern
New Hampshire University and working on a bachelors degree
in Criminology and Homeland Security, and I am attending
Methodist University and working on a masters degree in Justice
Administration.
I was recently nominated to serve on the North Carolina League
of Municipalities (NCLM) Chiefs’ Advisory Panel. The panel is
comprised of 12 police chiefs from across North Carolina and is
responsible for implementing training programs within the League
Shield Services, including the Risk Review that we completed
in September. To date, only 12 police departments in North
Carolina have completed the NCLM Risk Review process, and I
am exceptionally proud to say that the Pine Knoll Shores Police
Departnient is one of those. The Chiefs’ Advisory Panel enacts

participated in 246.5 training hours. Volunteers in Police Service
(VIPS) worked 71 hours.
FIRE AND EMS
In February, responders handled 16 rescue and emergency
medical service calls, 1 hazardous condition (no fire) call, 1 service
call, 2 good intent calls, and 3 false alarms or false calls. Personnel
participated in 439 training hours.
REMINDER; Lock your doors, especially your vehicles, and don’t
leave valuables in sight. Report suspicious people or vehicles to
dispatch (726-1911) so that the police can be notified. You are not
“bothering” the police if you call to report something that doesn’t
look right. They prefer to assess the situation rather than find out
after the fact that you had noticed something and didn’t report it.
Alert citizens are an asset to the community.
