©n Club By Clare Winslow At the Garden Club meeting on March 14, President Susan King announced that Charlotte Hamilton has agreed to replace Karen Zaenker as captain of the town garden at Mimosa Boulevard. She also informed us that the site chosen for our childrens garden club is behind town hall next to the picnic table, and even contains water. She shared that the new Garden Club brochures were well received by locd realtors, who have agreed to include them in all new residents’ information packs. Membership chairman Toni Cox advised that there are currently 37 members in the Garden Club. Hostesses Jean McDanal, Martha Edwards and Jo Ferguson provided a St. Patrick’s Day-themed refreshment table and treats that included Irish soda bread. Horticultural chairman Sheryl Woodbury pointed out that many of our plants seemed to have been killed by the frigid weather this winter, especially her Confederate jasmine, but expressed hope that many roots may have survived to send up spring shoots. Martha Edwards informed us that the Garden Club Arbor Day ceremony will be held at town hall on April 27, the same day as National Arbor Day. The town held its Arbor Day celebration on March 16 to coincide with North Carolina’s Arbor Day events. The Garden Club will plant a tree to honor deceased members Shirley Schaeffler, Lois Strube, and Lois Heffelfinger. Members voted to approve the roster of proposed club officers for the 2018- 2019 club year. Officers are Susan King, president; Charlotte Hamilton and JoAnn Shallcross, first vice presidents; Jean McDanal, second vice president; Linda Langheld, recording secretary; Kathy Blowers, corresponding secretary; and Lisa Park, treasurer. The program for this business meeting was to be our March 23 bus trip to the North Carolina Museum of Art for the “Art in Bloom” exhibit. While on that trip, a stop was planned at Logan’s Garden Center to purchase several salt tolerant plants and plants that are attractive to butterflies (such as milkweed). The Garden Club meets on the second Wednesday of every month at town hall at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments, followed by the program at 10 o’clock. Guests and visitors are always welcome to attend.
