?! Garaen Club By Clare Winslow On June 13 over 30 members of the Pine Knoll Shores Garden Club attended the annual spring luncheon at the Coral Bay Club in Atlantic Beach and installed new officers for 2018-2019. The club was very fortunate this year to have so many of its current officers willing to assume the same office for the coming year. Susan King was installed as president, Jo Ann Shallcross as 1st vice president, Jean McDanal as 2nd vice president, Linda Langheld as recording secretary, Lisa Park as treasurer, and Kathy Blowers as corresponding secretary. Ilene Karlsson acted as the installing officer for the ceremony, outlining the duties and responsibilities of each office and presenting each officer with a Bromeliad plant. Lana Hathaway gave an invocation at the start of the ceremony; we observed a moment of silence in honor of our four members who died this year; and we acknowledged members Karen Zaenker and Olga Welsh, who both moved away. Susan King was presented with a butterfly-decorated water gauge for her yard from the club members for doing such an outstanding job as president last year. After expressing her appreciation. President King thanked her outgoing officers for their hard work throughout the year—1st Vice President Ilene Karlsson for the clubs programs each month; 2nd Vice President Jean McDanal for handling the very demanding organization of tending our 10 gardens; Recording Secretary Linda Langheld for her timely minutes; Treasurer Lisa Park for handling our money; and Corresponding Secretary Kathy Blowers for keeping us up-to-date with the health and welfare of each member. President King reviewed the highlights of our club during the past year, including choosing our new theme of butterflies (and plants to attract them); our new Garden Club brochure, which was well received by local realtors; Gini Stambaughs successful sale of our garden gloves; the Christmas decorations at town hall and the library staged by Lois Jean O’Keefe and helpers; the club yearbook, created and published by Barbara Yankauskas, which won the third place award at District iTs board meeting; the club’s trip to Underground Farms; the lighting of the Blue Star Memorial marker, led by Arleen Graczewski, Karen Zaenker and Susan King; the creation and distribution of wreaths and swags throughout the town by Martha Edwards’ committee at Christmas time; the decorating of Beaufort’s old Post Office for the National Park Service; the bus trip to the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh for the Art in Bloom exhibit; and the Arbor Day ceremony honoring four of our deceased members (Shirley Schaeffler, Lois Strube, Joan Brown and Lois Heffelfinger). Members worked a total of 518 hours in the town gardens this year. Although the club is on hiatus for July and August, our voluiiteer members still tend our 10 gardens, weeding, planting, pruning and mulching throughout the summer. Our club meets the second Wednesday of each month at town hall at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments, followed at 10 o’clock by the program of the day. Guests and visitors are always welcome.
