ffU^ori By Ken Jones Welcome to the summer of 2018. This is going to be the best ever. I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone, everywhere, who took part in this years Kayak for the Warriors events. Held on May 27, 31 and June 2, everything was very successful and may well have set some records. One of the most common comments from the race was about all the supporters who were along the canal cheering for the kayakers. I am very proud to live here with you, and even prouder to be your mayor. Volunteers, staff, the PIKSCO HOA, sponsors, and our community at large make our team unbeatable. On May 29 and 30, Town Manager Brian Kramer and 1 went to Raleigh for talks with our legislators on some current issues facing our town and to keep our contacts up-to- date in case we need their vote to help us in the future—specifically with regard to the ugly head of the Sales SrUse Tax redistribution monster. It is always good to see. and thank those who have stood for us in the past so we can make sure they’re still with us. One of the other subjects we went to ask for is funding for pedestrian-activated crosswalk hghts. Specifically, we are trying to get grant money for crosswalk lights like the ones in front of the Dollar General just across the border in Atlantic Beach. Many of you have asked for these because the passive flashing yellow hghts that are on all the time possibly cause people to become complacent. I know this is repetitious, but please wear bright clothing that is easy to see by drivers. The new LED street hghts over our crosswalks are very helpful, but every little bit extra wih help prevent an accident between a pedestrian and a vehicle. For the past several years, I have asked homeowners associations if they would like any of our elected folks to speak at their annual meetings. This year we have been asked to speak at many and have been able to address some of their concerns to their immediate satisfaction. This close contact and communication is also why we have the annual HOA summit, and why we will continue to try to improve commimication with ah property owners and residents. Our seasons here on the Crystal Coast are winter, spring, summer, faU, and hurricane season. Hurricane season is from June 1 through November 30, with the peak around the middle of September. Please take all weather watches and warnings seriously—and be prepared. If you do not have a re-entry pass, one can be obtained at the Pine Knoll Shores public safety building located on Salter Path Road. This pass is for property owners and residents of our town. We do use them, and we do turn people away if they don’t have one. Make this yom first step in your storm preparedness plan. One last note; Five years ago we celebrated the 40th anniversary of Pine KnoU Shores. This year is the town’s 45th birthday. Happy Birthday, Pine Knoll Shores. This is always a great place to be, and the warmth and sunshine of summer make life even better. I wish you and your family a fun and safe summer. One team, one town, one Pine Knoll Shores. Join a work day, be a park captain, help with a week of beach duty, count votes at the annual meeting or create your own special way to give back to your HOA. Our five standing committees (Nominating, Architectural Control, Auditing, Parks and Waterways) are well established and offer continuous opportimities to learn about and help with the business of running our HOA. The Nominating Committee works all year to provide candidates for the annual election. The Architectural Control Committee ensures that any building, fence or other structure conforms to our deed-restricted covenants. The Auditing Committee examines the HOA financial records, announces the status at the annual meeting and may conduct special audits as directed by the Board. The Parks Committee is responsible for all maintenance in all common areas, including security gates, park security, stickers, gate cards and violation notices. The Waterways Committee is responsible for maintenance in the marinas at Brock Basin and Hall Haven, plus maintenance of channel markers and bulkheads, dredging and removal of obstructions in the water. Although not standing committees, there are three more committees that work on areas that require ongoing committee efforts: Publicity, Covenants and Long Range Planning. The Pubhcity Committee compiles information and HOA updates for our newsletters. Shoreline articles, and other information sites. The Covenants Committee reviews and makes recommendations ahead of our three-year review cycle (as dictated by our bylaws). The Long Range Planning Committee has just started looking at the PKA vision for the future, what level of dues we need, and our reserves. One of the best ways we have found that members can support our HOA is attendance at our monthly meetings. This may seem to be a minor contribution to our collective effort, but it is one of the most valuable ways to provide the Board of Directors direct input on the issues that are being addressed. This direct interaction is of real benefit, and members’ investment of just 30 minutes to stop by the monthly meeting to provide input or just hsten to discussion about PKA is time well spent. We appreciate all input and hope to see you when you can be a part of our organization. Our HOA also has an advocate or liaison to our sister HOA, PIKSCO, which allows for discussion and collaboration on common issues, and we occasionally have a local government advocate who takes questions and concerns to our town as needed.
