Seeking K4TW Volunteers

As we begin the New Year, we are already gearing up for the 2019 Kayak for the
Warriors (K4TW) activities in late May and June. Expanding our online presence
has been good for us, but doing so means having to devote more time working with
our website, registration, etc.
We are currently looking for help in the following areas:
1. Someone to help transition our web page into a more updated version and be
willing to update information as necessary
2. A person or persons willing to act as drink coordinator for our events. This
position entails reaching out to existing contacts that donate water, soft
drinks, and sweet tea for all our events. The contacts are already in place; this
person would simply coordinate the donations. Naval Federal Credit Union
provides plastic bags and water for our events, and the Single Marine Program
coordinator at Cherry Point helps provide a Marine work detail for the kayak
race.
3. Public relations is an important aspect of our events, and we need someone
willing to contact various publications, town offices, etc., to get the word out.
We have a list of contacts for this as well.

easier. Thank you for considering becoming a part of this important town event.
Req^cle Christmas Trees
Please recycle cut Christmas trees (all decorations removed) by leaving
them in the parking lot of the Iron Steamer beach access. Trees are picked up
and placed along the beach to help preserve our dunes. Just drop them off, and
we’ll do the rest. Please call town hall at 247-4353 with any questions.
2019: The Year of the Tree

Pine Knoll Shores has proclaimed 2019 as “The Year of the Tree,” A working
group came together after Hurricane Florence and started brainstorming ideas for
replacing our lost and damaged trees. The Community Appearance Commission
(CAC) is taking the lead on the year-long effort to highlight and reinforce the many
benefits provided by our island tree canopy and to replace some of the trees lost
during the hurricane. According to the town publication “Building & Landscaping
in Pine Knoll Shores,” the town’s policy has always been to “maintain and improve
the maritime forests, physical appearance, and quality of life in Pine Knoll Shores.”
2019: The Year of the Tree is a town-wide program of public awareness and
participation to start the process of replacing some of the many trees lost during
the last hurricane season and bolster the remaining maritime forests. Since this is
a town-wide effort, homeowners, the Garden Club, neighborhoods, HO As, visitors
and town staff can all get involved in this latest effort undertaken by our Tree City.
The best candidates for replacing trees or replanting areas in Pine Knoll Shores
are those naturally occurring trees on our unique barrier island. These native
species are successfully adapted to our salt and wind environments. Town hall
maintains a current list of “plants of Special concern” that showcases the full variety
of native trees and shrubs that thrive in our southern outer banks.
The CAC assists the town Board of Commissioners and director of zoning
and inspections. Four goals of the CAC are: 1) promoting public awareness and
participation in goals and projects, 2) strengthening ties to neighborhoods by
participating in neighborhood appearance projects, 3) supporting streetscape
initiatives, and 4) supporting town appearance standards. The appointed volunteers
of the CAC are also residents of Pine Knoll Shores who work hard to ensure that
the natural beauty of the town will be preserved for future generations, despite what
buffets our barrier island.
While we cannot replace the trees we lost in a single year, we can start the
process and the new generation of maritime forest regrowth. Many of the trees we
lost predated the town by decades, and this effort-will ensure trees for the future.
Think of this as planting trees for your grandchildren’s grandchildren. Join us for
The Year of the Tree.
