For the month of February, the art gallery will feature the colorful acrylic paintings and collages of Morehead City resident Tim Bradford. Mr. Bradford and his wife, Meg, are Ohio natives, and he received his B.F.A. and teacher certification from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. With the encouragement of Reverend Everett Thomas, Mr. Bradford set up an art gallery 10 years ago in the parish hall at St. Francis by the Sea in Salter Path. He is presently serving on the board of the Arts Council of Carteret County. The display cases will feature the handmade jewelry of Beaufort resident Rachel Horne Croom for a second month. Ms. Croom has always been artistic, from watercolors to oils as a child, to pen and ink while sailing, and, finally, to jewelry. She started making beaded jewelry about 18 years ago and was certified in Precious Metal Clay (PMC) by Cece Wire in January 2005. PMC, which comes in a clay form similar to modeling clay, is formed and molded into the desired shape. After drying, it is sanded and fired in a small kiln. In the firing, the organic binders . burn off and the piece becomes 99.9% pure silver, which is then tumbled and polished. Ms. Croom is a member of the Carteret County Arts and Crafts Coalition, as well as the Arts Council of Carteret County. She enjoys travel and picking up ideas from architecture, nature, and different cultures. After she visited Bali and China, her designs became more influenced by the Orient. Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador and Peru gave her new ideas, with the Mayan and Incan influence. No artists’ reception is scheduled for February. '.V An example of the artwork of Tim Bradford AGE-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY For Our Longer Lives By Kathy Werle Looking ahead to getting around Getting from point A to point B is a part of the daily routine for everyone, regardless of age. The Age-Friendly Advisory Committee invited Lee Padrick, Chief Economic Development Planner for the NC Department of Commerce, to its December advisory meeting to discuss the transportation needs of the town’s residents. Transportation is one of the eight domains of community life identified by the World Health Organization that influence the health and quality of life of a town’s residents. As members of the committee continue their ongoing mission of offering the town’s older residents the information they need to live independently in their homes as long as they wish, the subject of transportation frequently arises. Pine Knoll Shores offers a safe and enjoyable walking and biking venue for its residents, but it is unlikely you will see many walking to the grocery store (although I saw one commissioner walking back from Food Lion), a doctor’s office or pharmacy—all basic destinations. I can’t imagine not driving my car to a point B, but I know there may come a time when I may be happy to let someone else do the driving, especially at night. Currently, a person calls Uber, which may not be available; a taxi, which can be costly; a friend; or CCATS. Apparently, the need has not been demonstrated for anything more routine. So how do we move forward? Mr. Padrick is drafting a transportation survey to determine the needs and wishes of the town’s residents. It will be a short, 10-question survey which will run February 1 to February 22 on SurveyMonkey. To access the survey, go online to surveymonkey.eom/r/QS7KL78. A resident may also fill out the survey at tovm hall. We strongly encourage everyone to complete the survey. Input from all town residents is always valued. The committee is grateful to town residents for their continued support of Age- Friendly Advisory Committee initiatives. Suggestions for other issues or activities for the committee to consider may be submitted to Sarah Williams at town hall at SWilliams@townofpks.com, or by calling 247-4353, ext. 13.
