2019 Arbor Day Celebration

If you happened to drive by the Pine Knoll Shores town hall on the morning
of March 22, you might have wondered why there were so many cars. Thanks to
a grant from FedEx and the Arbor Day Foundation, Community Appearance
Commission (CAC) members and volunteers passed out 1,000 free trees to
residents. The program was a major success.
After the devastating loss of trees due to Hurricane Florence, Pine Knoll Shores
has been working to find ways to bring trees back to town. Earlier in the month, ■
larger trees were sold at subsidized prices, delivered, and planted at residents’
homes. The trees on hand for Arbor Day were smaller and easier to hand out and
load into people’s cars. Trees were passed out on Friday and Saturday morning, and
there will be workshops held later in the year on how to care for your trees.
It was a beautiful day for both passing out trees and having our Arbor Day/Tree
City USA celebration. The CAC gathered at noon on the front steps of town hall to

Hurricane Readiness

Hurricane season starts on June 1, and this article is a tough one to start as the
effects of Hurricane Florence are still being felt by the community. While we are still
in recovery mode from Florence, we should be hypervigilant in our preparations for
the upcoming 2019 season. It’s always a good practice to review our response to any
significant event to see where we prepared well and where we were deficient—and
make plans to correct our deficiencies. I think we should start with the basics.
Be sure you have a Hurricane Reentry Pass. Hurricane Florence was actually
the first storm where having a reentry pass made a difference as to when you were
permitted to return to the island. There is still time to get your pass before hurricane
season begins. No passes will be issued once hurricane season begins; check now to
be sure you know where your pass is. This change was made because it is vital that
our town personnel are able to concentrate on securing the town—and they do not
have the time to issue passes. Of course, those who purchase a home or move into
town during hurricane season will be able to obtain a pass. See instructions below
from the Police Department on how to get your pass if you need one—and the
documentation you will need for this purpose.
Take advantage of helpful websites. The website for the National Weather Center
(nhc.noaa.gov) has Doppler radar, hurricane tracking, etc. This is a handy site to
have in your Favorites. In addition, the FEMA website (ready.gov/hurricanes) con
tains information on how to get prepared for storms and includes information on

Reentry Pass Reminder
Hurricane season begins on June 1, and it is important that Pine Knoll Shores
homeowners and residents check your reentry passes now to be sure you
know where they are. No passes will be issued during hurricane season, which
runs from June 1 to November 30, except in the case of a new homeowner or
renter. If you are unable to find your pass, stop by the public safety build
ing at 314 Salter Path Road before May 31 and pick up a new one. Please be
prepared to show your driver’s license with your Pine Knoll Shores address, a
utility bill with your address or your purchase/rental paperwork. We cannot
issue a reentry pass without one of these types of documentation. If you are
out of town and will not return before May 31, please contact Natalie Gibble
at ngibble@townofpks.com or 247-2268 to make arrangements for your pass.
Please note that there is a $25 fee for replacing a previously issued pass.
