Next dinner with the mayor. The next dinner with the mayor will be on a Saturday night in February, somewhere in the greater Raleigh area. This will allow our second-home owners to meet with the mayor in mid-winter, close to home, and receive an update on our early February 2020 annual planning meeting. If you know of a location that has a private area that can seat 35-40 people, please email me at manager@townofpks.com. We will distribute the details via email, so if you are not signed up for the town’s email alerts, please go to townofpks.com and click on “Sign up for Constant Contact Here.” Hurricane Dorian cleanup and pine beetle tree cleanup. Fire Chief Jason Baker and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) did a great job putting together the required monitoring efforts, and we completed cleanup from Hurricane Dorian on October 4. The work by CERT was worth it: FEMA approved our debris cleanup costs for federal reimbursement, so the FEMA-compliance monitoring work paid off. By the time you are reading this, we will be picking up the last of the trees from the summer’s pine beetle outbreak. The deadline to have the trees on the right of way from the pine beetle issue is Eriday, November 8. New roof at town hall. The town is going to replace the roof at town hall this winter. The storms of the past two years have damaged enough shingles to necessitate this step. There should be no interruption to town hall services. The project will include the removal of the shingles and subsurface, but no framing or plywood will be removed. Public safety building work pending. As you have seen by now, the trailer has been removed from the lot next to the public safety building. As of this writing, we are two weeks away from opening bids to have the drywall replaced, the floor installed, and the windows replaced for the entire building. At present the department is working out of their normal spaces, albeit without flooring or drywall. We hope to have things back to normal by the end of this year. Street drainage work. The town is going to do some street drainage work in three specific areas where we have seen flooding and drainage issues in the past. We have selected these three spots based on areas of frequent ponding or poor drainage. They are: • the north end of Loblolly near street address 168 • the Walnut-Acorn intersection, along with Acorn Court proper • the intersection of Yaupon and Oakleaf We will meet with neighbors in these areas ahead of time to let you know what we are going to do. Ail work will be in the town right of way area. Phase II Stormwater Project. There is good news to pass along on this project. Thanks to Town Clerk Sarah Williams’ diligent work with the North Carolina Coastal Federation and Public Services Director Sonny Cunningham’s work to demonstrate that the best way to mitigate the impacts of stormwater in the east end of town is to manage the water table. Pine Knoll Shores has been awarded a grant by the NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund to design and construct the Pine Knoll Shores East End Phase II Stormwater Project. We will soon be contacting many of you to initiate discussions on easements for the underground line that will run from Willow to Myrtle Court. The town is in the process of meeting with those citizens whose property is near the location of the line. We are also talking to the Crystal Coast Country Club about the project. Setbacks. The Board of Commissioners has directed the Planning Board to examine our setback ordinance. Specifically, the commissioners want the Planning Board to examine allowances for HVAC and generators inside setbacks. This was precipitated by five recent cases of this issue coming up. Pine Knoll Shores is the only town in the area that has this restriction, and the board will take a look to see if it makes sense still today. Post-Florence beach project. In early October, the town signed a contract with Great Lakes Dredge 8c Dock for the renourishment project we announced on September 20. Carteret County Shore Protection Officer Greg “Rudi” Rudolph has put together an informative project web page at carteretcountync.gov/797/Post- Florence-Renourishment-Project. The project plans are on display in town hall, and all are welcome to stop by to see the design. A reminder is extended to oceanfront homeowners to hold off on any stairs/ fences/vegetation until after the sand has been delivered and the vegetation installed. The project will start in February 2020. y/e Speciah’Te in Cleaning Orienpa! 7^rea Fngs NEW LOCATION feapurinj Area Rug Cleaning Facility 247-7807 / 638-7020 800-560-7807 Professional Service For Over 18 Years call;2?afree .
