This year has been a challenge with the COVID-19 crisis, and now hurricane
season is upon us.
My advice for hurricane preparation remains essentially the same year to
year—and I encourage residents and homeowners to prepare now, not when we
are threatened by a storm. Best practices and tips for hurricane preparedness
include:
• Important paperwork—documents you will need to begin the recovery
process like insurance papers, social security cards and bank information.
Keep these together for easy access.
• Know the location of your reentry pass. You must present a reentry pass
to return to the island after an evacuation. Replacement passes are not
issued during hurricane season (June 1-November 30), but an exception
will be made in the case of closing on a new purchase of property outside
of these dates. New owners requesting a reentry pass must present proof
of purchase within 30 days of settlement in the form of a closing statement
or billing statement, along with a photo ID. Contact Sheila Bupp at the
public safety building at psbadmin@townofpks.com or 247-2268 for more
information.
• Have enough food/supplies for 96 hours. Stock up on nonperishable food
items and water, and don’t forget supplies for your pets. Place these items in
a box or crate in a safe place.
• Check your supply of medications. Be sure that you have adequate
supplies of prescription medications to last if you are evacuated or are
unable to get to the pharmacy for a few days. This, too, should be stored in
a safe, dry place.
• Make sure your basic emergency kit is up to date. Ensure that you have
fresh batteries in your flashlights, a battery-operated radio and that your
first-aid kit is well stocked.
• Keep your car topped off with fuel. To avoid long lines at the gas station in
the event of an ordered evacuation, make sure to keep adequate fuel in your
car during hurricane season.
• Have some cash on hand. If we experience an extended power outage,
ATMs may be out of service.

On May 14, Pine Knoll Shores
lost a good man. For Mayor Ken
Jones, the campaigns are over, the
difficult decisions are in the past,
the contentious meetings are in
the rear view mirror, and it’s time
to reflect on what he did for Pine
Knoll Shores. The message I hope
to convey here is that there simply
wasn’t a person who cared more
about the people of Pine Knoll
Shores than Ken.
In describing the mayor, I
would often tell people that
he was 10 miles wide and one
inch deep—and going 100 mph
doing it. That was my way of
