41 Next dinner with the mayor. Our next dinner with the mayor will be on Saturday, July 11, at 5:30 p.m. at the Inn at Pine Knoll Shores. This is our annual Saturday dinner in July when we target second-home owners. All are welcome. 2020 beach renourishment project. By the time you are reading this, we will be close to completing the installation of vegetation on the beach strand. The town is placing posts and ropes at all public beach accesses to direct beachgoers in order to limit destruction of plants. We encourage all oceanfront property owners, condominiums and property managers to contact us to see how this can be done in accordance with the specifications provided by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Please contact summer intern Charles Rocci at intern@townofpks.com. Phase 2 stormwater project. On June 19 the town held a public briefing on the status of the project. We discussed the location of the line running through eastern Pine Knoll Shores, the plans on the grounds of the country club and the project timeline. For further information on this project please contact Sarah Williams at swilliams@townofpks.com. Protecting our trees. Code enforcement is the least pleasant activity in town government. It is, however, necessary to keep Pine Knoll Shores in harmony with the natural environment and maintain and improve the same, which is a key strategic issue for the town. Last year the town imposed a $10,000 fine for vegetation removal on the ocean front. This past month we imposed significant fines for two separate cases of significant tree removal without permits. We could use help from everyone in the community to help us identify issues before they become violations by letting us know if you see tree removal activity for which you suspect there is no permit. Small dredging project on the east end of town. The US Army Corps of Engineers will dredge a portion of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway north of Pine Knoll Shores. They have asked the town to help coordinate with two property owners on the east end of town (the country club and a single land owner on the ocean) to run a pipeline along the eastern end of town from Bogue Sound, under the highway and onto the beach. This project will deposit approximately 100,000 cubic yards of sand. A similar project was completed in 2008 without issues. Typical summer health and safety concerns. We want everyone to enjoy their stay in Pine Knoll Shores this summer. The following is a list of issues that seem to come up each year. Please consider the information below during your stay—and have fun while you are here. Safety/courtesy on the beach: • Know where you are on the beach. Every public beach access has an assigned letter, and you are no more than 1/2 mile from one of these accesses. If you need to call 911, the Carteret County dispatch center has these locations. In short, know if you are “just west of access A.” • Have a cell phone in your party while on the beach. • Check out the surf conditions, and be aware of the warning flags (posted at all public accesses and some private ones). If you do not know the surf condition, call the Public Safety Department at 252-247-2268 for that information. • Please keep your dogs on leash and clean up after them as required by town ordinance. • Remember that the town code does not allow glass containers on the beach, requires beachgoers to refill holes, requires beachgoers to stay off the dunes, and requires surfers to wear ankle leashes. Crime prevention tips: • Lock your automobile doors. The police report that the common denominator for the vast majority of vehicle thefts in Pine Knoll Shores is an open vehicle. The typical scenario is middle-of-the-night thieves walking (or riding bikes) down our streets simply looking for open cars. This is particularly important at beach access parking lots—even the private lots. • Call 911 if you see anything suspicious. • In non-emergency situations, if you need to ask a Pine Knoll Shores police officer a question or simply pass along some information, call 252-726- 1911 and your call will be answered at the County Communications Center. You may then ask the attendant to have a police officer contact you. Please remember that for any situation that actually involves suspected criminal activity you should call 911. This remains the most effective and reliable way to quickly have a patrol car dispatched to your home. When deciding which number to call, consider this: if you need an officer to physically come to your location or if there is suspected criminal activity involved, always call 911. It is critically important that when a law enforcement officer actually deploys to a scene he does so only after being centrally dispatched via the 911 system. If you are requesting/passing information only, call 247-2474. Travel in and around town: • Obey the speed limits, particularly on the heavily used roads of Oakleaf Drive, Mimosa Boulevard and Highway 58. This is for everyone’s safety. • Crosswalks: Many of us get to the beach at Mimosa and Juniper roads. We have crosswalks at these two locations, as well as at the Hampton Inn. If you are a pedestrian, please use common sense and ensure that vehicles see you and are yielding to you. Do not assume that because you are standing on the sidewalk they will stop. If you are a driver, NC law requires you to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Garbage cans on the roadside/proper use of town convenience sites. It is that time of year when our beautiful town gets stretched to the limit with services. One of these is the proper disposal of household garbage. Town code requires cans to be put out Sunday night and picked up on Monday: “Containers should not be placed out front any earlier than the evening before the regularly scheduled pickup time and shall be removed within 12 hours after collection.” (Continued on page 12) 10 The Shoreline I July 2020
