New Leadership for Pine Knoll Shores (Continued from page 1)
At the July 8 meeting, our goal is to appoint and swear in a new mayor who
will serve the remainder of Kens term. A new election will then take place at
the general municipal election in November 2021. Again, we took the mayoral
selection seriously and considered what we thought was best for the town of Pine
Knoll Shores today, tomorrow and in the future.
We are grateful to have so much talent among our Pine Knoll Shores citizens
and especially those who were willing to take on the challenge of public service.
The individuals who submitted their interest to serve as mayor are (listed in order
of receipt):
• John Brodman, 116 Salter Path Road
• Alexander Smith, 135 Oakleaf Drive
• Clarkson Edwards, 106 Carob Court
• Robert Cox, 260 Oakleaf Drive
Article III, Section 3.1, of the Pine Knoll Shores Charter states:
The Mayor shall be elected by the qualified voters of the Town
for a term of two (2) years. In case of a vacancy in the office of Mayor,
the remaining members of the Board of Commissioners shall choose his
successor for the unexpired term [emphasis added]. The Mayor shall be
the official head of town government and shall preside at all meetings
of the Board of Commissioners. Where there is an equal division
upon any question, or in the appointment of officers, by the Board,
the Mayor shall determine the matter by his vote, and shall vote in no
other case. The Mayor shall exercise such powers and perform such
duties as are or may be conferred upon him by the general laws of
North Carolina, by this Charter, and by the ordinances of the Town.
The Board of Commissioners shall choose one of its number to act
as Mayor Pro Tempore, and he shall perform the duties of the Mayor
in the Mayor s absence or disability. The Mayor Pro Tempore as such
shall have no fixed term of office, but shall serve in such capacity at the
pleasure of the remaining members of the Board.

Out and About
By Sara Barbee
A treat for the eyes. Being outdoors lifts my spirits and offers an escape into a
world of wonder. A visit to Vision Gallery in Morehead City gives me this same
touch of bliss. For 30 minutes, I am surrounded by beautiful ideas and shapes
and colors. I lose myself in oceans and buildings from far-away places and
beautiful people. Who wouldn’t be amused by a ceramic hippopotamus in a tub
with his little green alligator and yellow ducky toys?
Owner Lee Dellinger grew up in Winston-Salem and majored and worked
in science. She visited art galleries with her mother but never pursued it as a
career until marrying a gallery owner in Morehead City. I asked Lee how to
choose a work of art for one’s home. “Trust your instincts. If a piece draws you
in, and you love it and think it looks good, it will work. If you have traditional
decor, wake up the room with a contemporary choice. Palette, size, contrast and
a gallery that allows you to take an artwork home on approval can make buying
something very appealing,” she said. Quoting a famous designer, she added,
“Every room needs a wart.”
I love much of what I saw this visit. Tyler Swain, an artist from Utah, portrays
a strikingly realistic butterfly (described in the art world as “trompe I’oeil,” which
translates to “fool the eye”) on a textured background. I wait for the butterfly to
flutter at any moment. Nicole Kennedy’s beach scene of a young woman standing
in the surf shimmers as a soft breeze caresses her hair and skirt. There are French
buildings and landscapes in 19th century techniques. I am transported and
delighted. I must describe an incredible oyster, sitting in the sand at the edge of
the waves. I can smell and feel the sand and the sea when gazing at this painting. It
dazzles. If possible, have Ms. Dellinger tell you about her artists and their work.
Vision Gallery is located at 4426 Arendell Street in Morehead City. Hours are
10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and the phone number is 247-5550.
What a joy to eat out. The first week restaurants were open for dining, my
friend and I had lunch at Mex Express Burrito, 5218 Highway 70, next to Pier
One. First you choose the burrito you prefer. I chose spinach and headed down
the line for fillings to be added. These range from beans and rice, to shredded
chicken and chopped beef„to pork and more. Adding sauces and avocado made
my burrito a very healthy size. At the front of the restaurant there was a table
with mild to smoking-hot sauces and little cups for tasting. Beware the mango—
it is seriously smoking. Because my friend lives nearby, she ventured to try a
small tequila with her lunch. See their menu at MexExpressBurrito.com or reach
them by phone at 773-0088.
The second week three of us Leaded to Yellowfin Pub in Morehead City for
lunch. I wanted to eat outside by the water, and this was a perfect spot on a
sunny and beautiful day. The piib is located at 501 Evans Street between Sanitary
Fish Market and Big Rock. I understand that they share the kitchen with
Sanitary, but the menu and taste? were quite different. One friend ordered a fish
taco with a kale salad as a side. T\vo of us ordered fish and homemade chips. The
fish of the day was black bass. This time our drinks were water and tea, but at the
next table over (one was skipped), there was an exotic Blue Mermaid drink. How
“island” does a Caribbean Sunset, Long Island, Mango Tango, and Pub Painkiller
sound? Check out the tempting menu on their website at yellowfinpub.com or
call them at 222-0231—and remember to wear sunscreen if you head out to eat
by the water.
