A Shoreline Community, Pine Knoll Shores, N.C.
October 2020
Honoring Our Librarians
By Mary Battista
Tears and smiles dominated the recognition ceremony to give thanks to the
keepers of the gem of Pine Knoll Shores, the Bogue Banks Public Library. Mayor
John Brodman welcomed the small gathering and led them in the Pledge of
Allegiance in the outdoor setting behind town hall on August 28, a day now
proclaimed to be the Bogue Banks Public Library Staff Appreciation Day.
Our three recently retired librarians, Brita Flynn, Donna Freeman and Andrew
Porter, have dedicated a combined 34 years of service to the Bogue Banks library,
and heartfelt thoughts and memories were shared by guest speakers and those
in attendance. Michelle Powers likened the library to the familiar Boston bar,
Cheers, from the popular television show of the same name that aired in the
’80s and ’90s, “where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you
came.” She reminded us that the library is so much more than a place to borrow
a book, and thanks to the librarians, it represented more of an unofficial welcome
center to our little
town. Kay Ffowe,
former president of
the Friends of the
Bogue Banks Public
Library, thanked the
honorees for their
unfailing support
and commitment to
the myriad efforts
the Friends have
pursued.
After presentation
of the proclamations
honoring our
librarians, each
honoree shared
words of appreciation
for their time at the
library, mixed with
sadness over its end.

PKS Temporary and
Political Sign Regulations
The Town of Pine Knoll Shores cannot regulate sign content for non
commercial signs. The regulations for temporary signs, including political
signs, in Pine Knoll Shores were changed in 2016 in order to comply with a U.S.
Supreme Court ruling on sign content and protection of free speech.
Temporary signs, including political signs, in the town’s right-of-way must
meet the following guidelines:
• One temporary sign is allowed in the town’s right-of-way.
• No sign may be installed without the permission of the property owner, or
their agent, of the property abutting the right-of-way.
• May be no larger than 4 square feet in size.
• Must not exceed a height of 3 feet above grade.
• Must be 12 feet from the edge of pavement. If this places the sign in a
wooded area, it may be located no closer than 6 feet from the edge of
pavement.
• Face of the sign must be parallel to the street.
• Sign placement may not impair vehicular visibility.
• May not be permanently installed.
• May not be located on a utility pole.
• No permit is required to erect the sign.
