I can’t believe we are already in April. Spring gives us a great opportunity to
change some things up around our homes with spring cleaning and yard work. To
help with your spring cleaning, the town provides bulk item pickup through GFL
to remove a piece of old furniture or an appliance. This year’s bulk item pickup
will be on April 27, and all items must be out the night before to allow for early-
morning collection. No items put out after the pickup will be collected.
Along with spring cleaning, warmer weather brings us the opportunity to
redesign our yards to enjoy the outdoors. This year you may want to consider
some do-it-yourself solutions to mitigate stormwater pollution through smart
yard strategies. The North Carolina Coastal Federation recommends three easy
solutions to mitigate stormwater pollution and save on unnecessary maintenance
and costs. Those solutions are rain gardens, rerouted downspouts and rain barrels.
Rain gardens are small, shallow vegetated areas that capture rain during
storms. They are lower than the surrounding lawn and act like a bowl to collect
stormwater from your roof or driveway, which could reduce stormwater runoff
by 90% or more. Using native plants in rain gardens can significantly lower your
maintenance and cost.
Reroute downspouts away from driveways, sidewalks or parking areas by
adding a diverter to turn downspouts away from impervious areas and toward
lawns, natural areas and, yes, rain gardens. Avoid routing downspouts to
neighboring property or over septic or drain fields.
Rain barrels are containers that collect and store rainwater from your roof
They are placed under roof gutter downspouts and are typically 50-55 gallons.
This offers a free source of water for plants and gardens, which, during the
summer months, accounts for nearly 40% of household water use.

Things are full speed ahead for
two Kayak for the Warrior (K4TW)
events. The Crystal Coast Country
Club (CCCC) will host our 2nd
annual K4TW Coif Tournament on Friday, May 21, with a four-person super
ball format. Tee off is 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Registration is $75, which
includes golf cart, 18 holes and lunch. There will be prizes for longest drive and
closest to the pin, and first place and second place will be awarded. Lots of fun
surprises are in store.
Forms for registration will be available at the CCCC clubhouse, in the side ves
tibule at town hall, and online at k4tw.org.
The Wheelbarrow of Booze will be raffled off at this event. You can win a
wheelbarrow with 20+ bottles of liquor. The barrow can be seen at CCCC, and the
$10 tickets are available there as well. For questions regarding this event, please

The second event will be our signature K4TW Kayak/Paddleboard Race on
Saturday, June 5, at 10 a.m. Registration is $50 for a single paddler and $100 for
tandem. A barbecue lunch and t-shirt are included. Paddlers are encouraged to
arrive early in order to complete the safety briefing. Registration forms are avail
able on the back of our brochure and can be found in the side vestibule at town
hall. Online registration, which is encouraged, can be found by visiting runsignup.
com/Races, entering Kayak for the Warriors in the search bar and scrolling down
to click on the listing.
Paddlers are asked to create teams and solicit donations from family and
friends. Donations will be tallied for each team in order to win the coveted Warri
or Trophy. The raffle for the Wine & Dine basket is returning. Tickets are $10, and
