Ken Jones Memorial Flagpole Dedicated It was a sunny, breezy day in May when 60-plus Pine Knoll Shores residents came to McNeill Park for the dedication of the memorial flagpole to honor former Mayor Ken Jones. Ken served as mayor of Pine Knoll Shores from 2009 to 2020, when he suddenly passed away at age 61. The location for the flag was chosen since Ken started every Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot by blowing his trumpet on the McNeill Bridge and greeted every participant as they crossed the finish line. In addition to the flagpole, a bench will be placed at Garner Park where Ken started every Kayak for the Warriors race. The bench was given by the Fischetti family from upstate New York, who were good friends of Ken during his days in the Air Force. Ken was proud to be a veteran and was an enthusiastic champion of Pine Knoll Shores and its residents. Kathy Falandys Tilyard spearheaded the concept of the Ken Jones memorial, collected donations and organized volunteers to maintain the flag. —Photos by Jerry Price, Erica Reed and MaryAnn Tormey i\ t V- Ewthttsiaslic Oiarnpioa K>r,Pinc Kn.)lf .Shttfcj.
