Tacks in the Road (Continued from page 8) I Golf Carts in Pine Knoll Shores (Continued from page 3) Each year since 2008 you have selected the town hall Christmas tree and have worked with Public Services Director Sonny Cunningham to design a beautiful and elegant setting of colors and lights. You served as the Garden Club’s project coordinator for the special committee that designed and oversaw construction of the beautiful Hereth Garden in front of the Pine Knoll Shores town hall. Generations of visitors have and will continue to marvel at the beauty of our town hall, and you are the person most responsible for this. You continue to this day, along with your husband, Paul, 41 years after moving here to care for this garden. A simple “thank you” from the town is entirely inadequate to show the amount of appreciation that we feel we need to shower you with. r' Recognition of exceptional service. Second row: Sheryl Woodbury, Steve Felch, Brian Kramer, Travis Adkins and Dee UarMey—Photo by Julie Anderson Plea: e know that your four decades of work are not only recognized by your neighbors, but also understood by all to be a record of service to the town that is unequaled. Sincerely, Mayor John Brodman 16‘ TheSho'rdtne'l'July2021 license. At no time should anyone under the age of 16 drive a golf cart, even under the supervision of a parent or guardian. Q: Gan 1 get arrested for driving while impaired if I operate my golf cart under the influence? A: Yes. A golf cart is considered a vehicle, and the same impairment laws apply to a golf cart as they do to your motor vehicle. Q: What happens if I do not renew my golf cart registration? A: If we see it parked at a beach access, we will put a warning sticker on it. Subsequent violations will result in a $50 civil fine per offense. We want everyone to enjoy their time at the beach and have fun operating their golf carts in a safe manner. If you would like to get more information on registering your golf cart or renewing your registration, please contact Shelia Bupp at 252-247-2474 or psbadmin@townofpks.com. PKA News By Bernie Williford Town budget for Fiscal Year 2021-22. The Board of Commissioners held a public hearing on the towns proposed FY2021-22 budget at their meeting on June 9 and ^'oled to adopt the budget as presented. There will be no tax increase this year. The budget is balanced, with projected revenues and expenditures for the sum of the General Fund, Water Enterprise Fund, Beach Expense Reserve Fund and Beach Capital Reserve Fund totaling $6,021,000. We are expecting one fairly large capital expense in the coming year to replace some aging sections of our main water lines along Highway 58. A final close-out of the books for FY 2020-21 is still a work in progress, and I should note that the town was still dealing with FEMA reimbursements for many items this year for previous expenditures related to Hurricane Florence. By way of comparison, the town’s total budget for the four items listed above was $5,199,500 in FY 2011-12 (10 years ago) and $4,837,000 in FY 2016-17 (five years ago)—but bear in mind that inter-governmental transfers for prior expenditures can make year-to-year comparisons difficult. The number of town employees in full-time equivalents (FTEs) was 27 in FY2011-12, 30 in 2016-17, and is 33 today. Stay safe and enjoy the summer. Summer temperatures finally arrived, and Ocean Park has been busy. Big thanks to Mike Di Lauro for organizing the Memorial Day weekend parking attendants to assist with orderly parking at Ocean Park and also to all those who volunteered to be parking attendants during this busy weekend. The next big weekend for parking attendant help is the Fourth of July weekend. Contact Mike Di Lauro at 919-397-8020 if you are interested in volunteering to help make this weekend a smooth and organized event at Ocean Park. We still have eight weeks available for volunteers at Ocean Park in the August through the last week of November time frame. Visit the Pine Knoll Association (PKA) website at pineknollassociation.com and sign up under the Register to Volunteer menu. If you have not signed up, please consider this great opportunity to help our association. Thanks to those who have already claimed their slot. We send a very warm welcome to our newest members: Shawn Palko, Jerry and Mary Beth Dejarnett, John and Gariy Silverthorne, Robert and Kathleen Mulrenan, Kim Daniel, Roy and Kelly Pisarski, and Franklin and Kelly Bartlett. The May board meeting held good news from several committees. Architectural Control chair Scott Rideout reported that packets were being turned around quickly, as members are following the suggestions to stay within guidelines. Parks chair Michael Di Lauro reported that the Sea Tow loaner life vest stations have been set up and that he is investigating installing cameras at Brock Basin and Ocean Park on a trial basis for monitoring during and right after storms and for security purposes. Waterways chair Renee Rogers reported the signage for channels has been ordered. The channel markings will be in accordance with Coast Guard regulations, and she and her husband will head up an education piece so everyone understands the markings. Please use the slowest speed possible to maintain control of your boat when (Continued on page 22) ft
