I hope everyone is having a great summer. Here are a few things happening in town. Planning for water main/road bore projects. This fall/winter we have a major water main replacement project planned on Highway 58, which will he on the south side of the highway and run from Willow Road east to the Atlantic Beach border. Sonny Cunningham is working with a design consultant on this. Many of our major water main leaks over the past decade have been in this area, and we think this project will address the problem. Street signs. Sonny Cunningham is about to order new six-inch, highly reflective street signs for many of the access roads onto Highway 58. They should be in place by the fall. Trash/recycling site enforcement. Just prior to Memorial Day, we sent out notification on social media concerning proper use of the site at town hall. We now have the area covered with security cameras. Though we do not like to do this, we have started enforcement action to ensure the site is not abused. After the holiday weekend, we mailed out three citations totaling $1,050 for improper dumping at town hall. Design of town hall steps and public beach access. Our consultant has completed the as-built measurements and existing plan drawings for town hall and the town’s eastern-most access near Oakleaf Drive. We are going to start work at town hall as soon as possible. The access will be addressed after the summer season. Second library building driveway? The fire and police chiefs brought forward a concern on something we have discussed in the past: the safety of vehicles and walkers as patrons for the library building drive past the front bay doors of the public safety building (PSB). The library building is starting to fill up. There is the library, a doctor’s office, the realty business, the Book Nook, and possibly a soon-to-come day spa. The chiefs see the traffic in front of the PSB as quite busy (a FedEx truck backed into one of our fire department ladders several weeks ago in this tight area). The board has not made a decision on this, but we are giving it a look. Fuel station hardening. During a FEMA visit, we discussed our desire to upgrade our gasoline and diesel tanks and modernize our pumps. The EEMA representative believes this would be classified as hazard mitigation work that could possibly be funded with federal resiliency funding. This is important to the town: Hurricane Florence validated how important it is to have our own refueling ability when commercial pumps throughout the area are not working. Pedestrian Planning. Tfte town’s Pedestrian Planning Group continues to meet to discuss what’s next for sidewalks in Pine Knoll Shores. We will give an in progress review to the Board of Commissioners at its meeting on July 14 at 6 p.m. Garbage cans on the road side. It is that time of year when our beautiful town gets stretched to the limit with services. One of these is the proper disposal of household garbage. Please be reminded that the Town Code requires cans to be put out Sunday night and picked up on Monday. The code reads: “Containers should not be placed out front any earlier than the evening before the regularly- scheduled pickup time and shall be removed within 12 hours after collection.” Of course, it is recognized that 75% of our property owners are second-home owners and that this schedule may not always be practical. This is a perfect (and appropriate) use for the trash/recycling site behind town hall. 20 The Shoreline I July 2021 New flood maps. We await word from the NC Department of Public Safety as to when the new maps will go into effect. I am hesitant to say when this will be, as we have been told “later this year” repeatedly. There is now new chatter from the state that the maps we have been talking about for some time may soon be published. If you are unsure what the new maps will mean to your property, you may go to fris.nc.gov/fris/ in order to see what zones your property lies in. Our staff will be ready to assist homeowners with understanding the program and what the potential effects on individual properties will be. If you do not have access to the internet or you are not proficient with CIS, contact Planner and Flood Plain Manager Kevin Reed at 252-247-4353, ext. 11, to set up an appointment. Know where you are on the beach. One of the most critical elements of response by our paramedics/EMTs is to deploy them quickly to the right location. You would be surprised by the number of people who do know where they are on the beach. All of our public beach accesses have a letter assigned as an identifying marker. For our two large eastern private accesses: Ocean Park is at 227 Salter Path Road, and Hammer Park is between 101 and 103 Bay Street. If you have friends and guests in your homes, ensure they know the street address on Salter Path Road where they are located on the beach or, simpler, that they know where they are in relation to the letter designation posted at all beach accesses.
