Tacks in the Road
(Continued from page 4)
Kevin Reeds role as staff support for the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC)
in addition to his role as Chief of Police. Ryan has a master s degree and is a
graduate of the UNC School of Governments Municipal County Administration
program. We are very confident that Charlie and Ryan will do a great job in their
new roles. Other tasks previously shepherded by Kevin Reed will be divided
among the town manager, assistant town manager/finance officer, and other staff
members working together as a team.
August was a month that showed us no mercy. Staff remained very busy
dealing with the impact of lightning strikes at town hall, multiple requests for
procurements of big items (fire truck, new roofs), grant applications, and very
active demands on our fire and police departments. We had an incident where
our police and fire/EMS crews had two separate water rescues in one day involv
ing a total of six people caught in rip currents. One person was hospitalized, but
no lives were lost. See “Kramer s Korner” in this issue for details of the incidents.
On behalf of the Board of Commissioners and the whole town, I would like to
give special thanks to the fire and police officers involved that include: Chief Ja
son Baker, Gregory Smith, Dalton Goodwin, Jessie Ghaplain and Brian Williams
from the Fire/EMS Department, and Dillon Haymore, Dakota Weathers and
Brian Rodgers from the Police Department. Great job, guys; welcome to Amity
Island!
Please feel free to contact me about any issue or to schedule an appointment. I
can be reached by email at mayor@townofpks.com or by cell phone at 252-622-
2338. Thank you, and stay safe.

What’s Up With PARC?
By Jean McDanal
T-shirts that commemorate Pine Knoll Shores’ 50th Anniversary continue
to be sold at town hall. A second order has arrived, and the response has been
good.
The Kayak for the Warriors Big Fat Check was presented to Hope For The
Warriors on August 10 at town hall. Our efforts resulted in $85,800 being raised
through our three events. Thanks to all donors, volunteers and participants. It is
only because of you that this happens.
The 7th annual Family Fishing Tournament is coming your way on Saturday,
October 8. Please see “7th Annual PKS Fishing Tournament” on page 1 in this
issue of-The Shoreline for details.
Plans for November’s Turkey Trot are in full swing, and thanks to Parks and
Recreation Committee (PARC) member Joe Francica, we now have a registration
website up and running at runsignup.com/Race/NC/PineKnollShores/
PKSTurkeyTrot. This year, we have slightly altered the course so there is a more
accurate measure of the distance, and we will have split timers calling the time at
each mile marker location. The 1.5-mile Dog Walk will be mostly an easy stroll
through the streets near McNeill Park, and we hope you will consider coming
out with your family. We encourage early registration so we can get an accurate
count of the t-shirts we need to order. This year’s t-shirts will be $15 each.
Proceeds from this year’s Turkey Trot will support the Kayak for the War
riors Angel Tree, and there is a button on the registration website to donate to
that worthwhile cause. You may remember that we collect money every year
that goes to vetted veterans’ families. Our affiliated charity, Hope For The War
riors, makes all the arrangements and ensures that needy children have a happy
Christmas.
Your Parks and Recreation Committee welcomes any suggestions for activities
that will get people out, moving and involved. If you have suggestions for PARC,
we want to hear from you. Please email PARCPR@ec.rr.com or come to one of
our meetings on the first Tuesday of the month. The next meeting is Tuesday,
September 6, at 6 p.m. at town hall.
