Savings Turtles Together (Continued from page 2) or outreach,” she says. “If we can intercept more turtles and prosecute more traf fickers, we are hopeful that we will see a dechne in illegal trade.” While not (yet) listed as threatened, aU species of North American box turtles were added to the initiative because their familiarity makes them good ambassadors. “Most people will never see these rarer turtles in the SAFE program,” Collins says. “Eastern box turtles are the turtles most frequently seen crossing the road and are the ones that people stop to help.” A number of the box turtles living in our habitat at the aquarium were injured by vehicles or dog attacks and were rehabilitated by Turtle Team, a third-year program of the veterinary school at NC State that gives students the opportunity to treat injured box turtles and other wild reptiles. Box turtles (and most turtles, in fact), can be amazingly resilient survivors, but whereas they might be able to recover from their injuries and return to the wild, they cannot be released without accurate data as to where they came from. For this reason, if you happen to find an injured turtle and take it to a rehab facility such as the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter (OWLS) on Highway 24 in Newport, make sure you can tell them exactly where the turtle came from so that it can be returned there after it is treated. OWLS can treat minor injuries in house but will transport more serious cases to Turtle Team. Meanwhile, our much larger outdoor habitat at the aquariirm will hopefully enable us to actively participate in the American Turtles program by allowing us to provide housing for confiscated box turtles in the future.
