October 2022 Teddy Wimberly— Our Own Force of Nature By Jason Baker, Chief Pine Knoll Shores Fire and EMS I came to Pine Knoll Shores in 2005 to drop off an application for a firefighter s position. I was warmly welcomed by Teddy Wimherley, who was sitting at the front desk of the public safety building. I was hired in June 2005 and have worked with Ms. Teddy ever since on many calls and events with the Pine Knoll Shores Fire and EMS (Emergency Medical Services) Department—but Ms. Teddy’s service to Pine Knoll Shores began long before we met on that day. Ms. Teddy was in Pine Knoll Shores’ first EMS class and began volunteering as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic in 1981, when the town’s Fire and EMS services were all volunteer and the EMS section was known as Squad 65. From 1981 to early 2007, Ms. Teddy operated the ambulance as an EMT and served in many ways, from an EMT to an officer of the squad. In 2007, squad designations were being done away with throughout the county, and Squad 65 was no exception. Pine Knoll Shores’ EMS was brought under the fire station designation of Station 64, and Eire and EMS became a combined single department. From 2007 to 2015, Ms. Teddy, as a Station 64 EMT, continued to serve the town by responding to calls and doing what she could to aid town residents who called 911 for assistance. In 2015, she decided to step back as an EMT, but wanted to stay involved. She continued to support Station 64 by serving as secretary of the Pine Knoll Shores Fire Auxiliary. While she served as secretary, she was responsible for t-shirt sales and other fundraising activities. While Ms. Teddy’s initial service to the town focused on the duties of an EMT, she also served as the secretary for the Fire and Police departments. Outside of Fire and EMS, she worked as a real estate agent, selling many homes here in Pine Knoll Shores—and my wife and I have her to thank for helping us buy our first (Continued on page 15) Teddy Wimberley—p/iofo by Shelia Bupp 7th Arniual PKS Fishing Tournament By Mary Cox The annual Pine Knoll Shores Family Fishing Tournament, scheduled for October 8, is open to all people living in Pine Knoll Shores; family members, including grandchildren; property owners; and town employees.
