GARDEN CLUB VISITS Some 45 Garden Club members with their husbands and guests, traveled to Wilmington on Wednesday, AZALEA GARDENS April B to view two of the better known azalea gardens. Marian Archibald was chairman of the day’s events, which included lunch at the Gray Gables restaurant. The group first toured the Airlie Gardens, which are kept mainly in a natural state. Even though the azaleas were not completely in full bloom the display was spectacular including the camellias, jasmine, banksai roses and the majestic moss-covered oaks and tower ing pines. Following iTinch, the group traveled to the Orton Plantation, where because these azaleas are an earlier variety, the grounds were a blaze of color. The formal gardens had been planted with banks of pansies, which will be replaced in mid-May with other blooming annuals. Again, the moss-covered trees and exotic ornamentals were fascinating. Before leaving Wilmington the group drove through the municipally owned Greenfield Gardens and Park where hundreds of azaleas, dog woods, camellians and wisteria were in bloom beside the huge pines and cypress trees. This was a spectacular bonus on the trip. AZALEA PLANTING IS Helen Granger, projects chairman lor the Garden Club has proposed that citizens buy PROPOSED FOR TQV/N HALL and plant an azalea bush in the circle facing our Town Hall. Colors of red, white, and pink are suggested. The town already has provided a bale of peat moss to assist in the planting and water is available in the fire department bay, but is suggested you bring your own bucket. If the shrubs are planted this spring the display next year should be most interesting and it is hoped everyone who can will partici pate . OCEAN PARK The new walkway and deck leading to the "Sit-Um" and beach at Ocean Park has been completed and should IMPROVEMENTS turn out to be a worthwhile and handsome improvement to the area. The inclined ramp, which replaces the steps, will be welcomed as an easier access, in addition to which the concrete walkway will reduce maintenance and continuing repairs. The Pine Knoll Association, Inc., members who donated their time and talents to this project are to be congratulated on a job *‘V/ell Done".
