In response Mr» Crane explained that an FM channel has been available since November, 19^0, \d.th music from an eastern North Carolina station, for which there is an annual charge of $1S« He also said that in the event of calls concerning interrupted service every effort always has been made to correct the matter as promptly as possible. He stated that expanding the number of channels has been delayed pending the merger with Newhouse, and stated that this probably will include an all-sports channel and ^ all-news channel, finally, he said, with the addition of a planned satelite receiver there will be improved reception. The group also said that v/ith new and improved antennas reception from Channel 11 (TOJK) and CHANIffil 7 (Washington) vdll be enhanced. • Since the meeting. Mayor Cleveland has recieved a letter from Mr. Crane advising him^that arr^gements have been completed vdth station WMT, at Chicago, to include their transirissions. This station, he said, ,was recently designated as the “Best ^ Station in the Country* for its unique programming and technical excellence. Their programming^includes live broadcasts and pre-recorded tapes from eight or- • chestras, including the Chicago Symphony, Boston Pops and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. As soon as the equipment is in place, he said, subscribers vd.ll be notified and that there will be no increase in the rate. GARDEN CLUB HEARS Joanne Pov/ell, of the Hampton Mariners Marine staff, was the speaker at the May meeting of the Garden Club and spoke on ’’Shore and Coastal Birds”. Through a narrated slide presentation i^scussed the habits, coloring, habitats and species of b^ds of this area, including gulls, sandpipers, terns, pelicans, loons, heron, egrets, skimmers and ospreys. In the bus^ess^session. President Becky Moore thanked Marion Archibald for arranging and directing the azalea tour of Wilmington. Helen Granger, reported there are 66 azaleas planted around the circle in front of the town hall by members ^d others. Jo Zeller, hospitality chairman, announced that the annual luncheon and installation of officers will be held at the Beaufort House on June 10. Finally, a workshop on plant propagation will be held at the home of Newell Haller on Wednesday, June 17, at 9:30 a.m., with Irene Doremus assisting. ANCIENT MARINERS At the annual dinner of the Ancient Mariners Bowling League, held Monday, April 27, at the Ramada Inn., vdnners of this year’s FETE WINNERS competition were presented v/ith awards. V/inning teams were those captained by Marj Ramsey, 1st; Karolyne Cleveland, 2nd; R^ SzypulskL,. 3rd; Larry Jerome, 4th; Ken Hoffmeyer, 5th; Art Browne, 6thj jDixie Eubanks, 7th; George Hillard, Sth; Frank Johnson, 9th; Arnold Smith, 10th; Eric Hassell, 11th, and Ken Knight, 12th. High scorers for the season vjere Frank Johnson with a 569 series, and Ray Szyi^ski, with a 554 series. For the girls, Dixie Eubanl^s had a 517 series, and Marj Ramsey rolled a 515 series.
