- 2 - COMMISSIONERS DISCUSS Police Commissioner Jack Thompson, at the October 6 meeting of the Board of Commissioners introduced a new ordinance aimed at controlling HOME SECURITY ALARMS the installation and maintenance of home security alarm systems. He reported the police answer a disproportionate number of false alarms each month, and the police, under the advisement of the town attorney, are recommending stricter controls for these devices. He said also that the false alarms are a continuing disturbance to neighbors. Under the proposed ordinance a property owner would obtain a permit from the town and then notify the town clerk and the police department of the completion of installation of the device. Further, the property owner must register the name of a contact person and an alternate who would be authorized to deactivate the system in the case of a false alarm when the owner is away. Persons already owning such systems would be required to comply with the last two rules. The ordinance also contains penalities for non-compliance. At Mayor Cleveland’s suggestion the Board delayed a vote on the ordinance until the November meeting to give property owners a chance to study the new ordinance.
