Commissioner of Planning Larry Jerome reported the Planning Board
had given final approval for the shifting of one street in the Maritime
Place Phase II project so as to save a very old and picturesque live
oak tree. Under the original alignment, the tree would have had to
have been removed for the street. He also reported that one building
permit had been issued for the construction of a single family dwelling,
and that permits have been issued for the construction of 2k condominium
units at the Genesis Phase I project, the initial grading for which is
now under way. In addition, two CAMA permits were issued and three
certificates of occupancy were issued. He said that Building Inspector
Bob Hope reported 11 residential structures were being erected along
with four condominium units.
He further reported that permits for additions and improvements
to existing buildings will not be required if the projected cost is
less than $2,500.00. However, he said, regardless of the cost the
building inspector must be advised of the project and its cost for
tax purposes. All plumbing and electrical work on such a project must
be accomplished by a licensed plumber or electrician. These require
ments should not prove a burden to property owners since the coven^ts^
of the Pine Knoll Association also have always required such notification
and approval.
Commissioner of Fire and Rescue Aubrey Johnson requested and received
approval of the appointment of Howard Laws as assistant chief and training
officer for the Fire Department. He further reported the Pine Knoll
Shores Rescue Squad had answered six calls during November and that
additional and replacement equipment for the ambulance had been ordered.
Police Commissioner Jack Thompson reported the police in November
answered 30 calls, made 230 inspections of houses whose owners were
absent and investigated 3 traffic accidents. He further reported that
Haywood Quinn had been employed as a police officer replacing Jeff
Mastrorocco, who has resigned.
The Board also approved a motion to change the time of the monthly-
meeting of the commissioners to 2 p. m., on the second Tuesday of each
month instead of S p.m. It was the concensus that perhaps a better
attendance of citizens would result from this change. However, in the
event of public hearings and other special meetings the Board would
consider the ^ p.m. time.
Finally, the Board approved the reduction of the Vision Cable bond
to $3,000.00 in accordance with their request. The Board concluded that
the company had performed its contracted agreement satisfactorily and
was entitled to the reduction.
The Board also announced the reappointment of Mayor V/ayne
Cleveland as the delegate from Pine Knoll Shores to the Neuse River
Council of Governments.
Before adjourning, the Board took the occasion to thank retiring
Commissioner Brad Smith for his dedicated service to the community
and publicly thanked him for his help. The Board also took note of
the landscaping improvements around the Town Hall, which had been
done on a volunteer basis under the able supervision of Erma Johnson.
