-2- expect to see progress made on this development. Two developers have presented plans for building a shopping center, one at Salter Path Road and Oakleaf Drive, the other at Salter Path and Pine Knoll Boulevard, We are cooperating with each developer within the limits of our zoning ordinances. However, I*m sure that only one shopping center will be built because both developers are talking to the same people. The center will contain a supermarket, a drug store, a variety store and a bank. I expect to see the beginning of a shopping center in 1983* We all think that we are getting too many high rise, multi-family units, but building has started in most all zones so I see no way we can further rezone to single family residences. We don't expect a tax increase in 1983, as additional building should provide the tax base to support all needs of the town, I ean*t pass up the opportunity of soliciting your help for our town's rescue squad by taking the EMT training course which will be offered in February. You would find this to be the most rewarding volunteer work you have ever done. There will undoubtedly be other changes, but these I have listed will give you an idea of some things to expect. As we close the old year may we, your town officials, wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year, COUNTY TAX At their monthly meeting December 14, Pine Knoll Shores town Commissioners heard Mayor Wayne P, Cleveland characterize the Carter^P OFFICE BLASTED County Tax Supervisor's computer setup as a "Mickey Mouse operation” incapable of providing PKS tax authorities with needed information. Cleveland said that "unless we get some kind of satisfactiorf'from the tax office the town would take its complaint to the County Commissioners, The session at the Town Hall also saw Commissioner Bill Dixson propose that the board study annexation of the area west of Pine Knoll Shores all the way to Indian Beach "before it gets cluttered up," The board approved changes to tighten up the town's zoning ordinance, voted to give Town Clerk Corinne Geer the added title and responsibilities of town finance officer, applauded the hiring of William P, Ballentine of Broad Creek, an architectural draftsman, as building inspector to succeed Bob Hope, who has let it be known he wishes to step down. Commissioner Aubrey Johnson touched off the disciission of the town's problems with the Carteret Tax Supervisor by announcing that because of computer problems the county would no longer be able to provide the town with copies of individuals' property tax listings, Mrs, Geer told the board that she and other town clerks in the county met with county tax officials to protest the changes which will make the clerks* tasks much more difficiat. However, she said they got no satisfaction. Mayor Cleveland asserted that "many pieces of property are not on the tax books," and Mrs, Geer noted that because of the county's slowness in setting valuations, she had just sent out bills to 63 taxpayers who should have been billed in July, She said th^^ firm of Ferris and Company of Charlotte, which figures valuations for Carteret County^^ takes from 30 days to six weeks to return an appraisal. She pointed out that as a result, the 63 taxpayers will have only until January 1, to pay their taxes without an interest charge,
