When questioned about the apparent change of stance by the PKS board, Cleveland said
that when it adopted the earlier resolution, the board understood that the state would
carefully explore both bridge proposals but the state board of transportation had voted for
Alternate 1 without doing so,
**I don*t think the input of those who favor Alternate ^ were given proper considera
tion,” he said.
**,,,A replacement bridge at the Alternate 1 site solves none of the current Arendell
Street problems and further compounds the situation as population traffic and industrial
traffic increase,** said the Dixson resolution, **The Alternate 1 proposal only adds another
50 years to an almost impossible situation,**
It said that spending $12 million to replace the present bridge at the same site
"only partially solves the traffic situation and in no way improves the current evactiation
path and is an operational and economic error of great magnitude,*'
In other actions, the board members assented to a suggestion by the mayor that the
town explore the possibility of sharing with Etaerald Isle and Cape Carteret the expense of
hiring a dog warden, Cleveland said an EmeraH Isle town commissioner had called him to
suggest this possibility.
Clevelstnd also announced the appointment of Clyde Lynn, John Shedd, Bob Whitmore aj^
Marty Hare to succeed Emily White, Winston Seale, Fred Korff and Luke Hargroves on the
Planning Boaxd. and designated George Falkenberg as the Board's chairman. Cleveland re
appointed George Hitch and George Zeller to the Community Appearance Committee and appointed
Bill Biricel and Plo Garrett to succeed Prank Johnson and Mrs. Hare.
The Mayor also announced the appointment of Bob Armstrong to succeed Milt Yaeck on
the Board of Adjustment.
The board voted unanimously to require property owners in the newly annexed area on
the western side of town to pay PKS property taxes for only half of 1983. In proposing
the action, Dixson said that since the area was annexed at mid year, "it seems only fair
to tax them for only half a year,**
Commissioner Aubrey Johnson told the board the order for a new ambulance for the
rescue squad had been placed and he hoped it would be delivered and placed in operation by

municipal election as the result of decisions by Commissioners Bill Dixson, Aubrey Johnson

Mrs, White and her husband. Dale, a senior editor for U.S.News and World Reports,
began visiting Bogue Banks in 19^ and bought a lot in 1972, plsmning to build and retii^^^
here. However, his death changed these plans. She lived in a condominium until she boi^B
her home in Maritime Place two years ago. She is a member of the fire and rescue squads,
has just stepped down as a member of the planning board and frequently fills in for Corinne
Geer and Brenda Cox at Town Hall, During World War II she was a member of the WAC and lived
in Europe for nine years after the war, worfcing for the office of the U,S, High Commissioner
to Germany while her husband worked as a foreign correspondent.
