Alcohol and aimonla shared the spotlight at the Board of CoaBissioners aeetloB on

aan for the Atlantis, John Yancey, Holiday Inn and Raaada Inn, asked the Board to call for
a refezenduB as soon as possible on liquor by the drink. He pointed
out the financial hardship on the town's motels and inconvenience to
guests who take their dinner business to Atlantic Beach and T»H1an
Beach where restaurants offer cocktails. He suggested that a “yes"
vote would encourage better restaurants to locate in Pine Knoll Shores

and said the motels would bear the cost of the referendum,
Kaureen Barker, speaking in opposition to the referendum, questioned if liquor by
the drink would enhance or erode our neighborhood quality. She expressed concern that
such an action would increase commercial toning and bring a flood of bars, night clubs,
aij^prinking establishments to Fine Knoll Shores,
Mayor Ken Hanan agreed to call a Town Meeting to get the opinions of residents on
the proposed referendum, (See notice following this article).
In answer to a request from the Planning Board that the town go on record as
opposed to the ammonia storage facility being considered for Radio Island, Mayor
announced that it seemed fair to give its proponents a chance to present their side of
the issue. He asked Commissioner Fred Libby to introduce John Carpenter of Texasgulf
Chemicals. Mr, Carpenter reminded those in attendance of Texasgulf*s 15 years in Carteret
Covnty, employing 90 people and its economic impact on the airea. He stessed the safety
features that would be incorporated in the facility and that 17? such storage are
already in operation «iroughout the United States.
Mayor Hanan announced that the Board of Commissioners had decided against opposing
the facility as the governing agent of Pine Knoll Shores, but that individuals could
their opinions known by writing to the Carteret County Board of Commissioners,

Town Clerks* Week in North Carolina and he commended Corinne Geer for her service to Pine
