Reports had it that Gloria ’’skirted" our area. Of course we are grateful that
she did not hit us with full force but she was disruptive enough. Banage to ocean piers,
beach walks and frontal dunes is all too evident. On the Sound, docks and/or fishing
THE SKIRTS stations were washed away and bulkheads damaged. At least one boat was
tom from its davits and sank in the channel. So the cost in property
OF GLORIA damage is thousands of dollars.
Certainly she disrupted the lives of all the town's citizens. Thanks
to the careful planning of the Civil Preparedness Committee we knew what to do ajid most
of us did it. Half the town's residents turned up in Goldsboro or Smithfield where
groups got together to compare notes and commiserate. Others scattered in different
directions. A few stayed until the last minute ~ notably the girls at the Town Hall
who were kept busy validating re-entry peisses or preparing new ones, Gil Millington and
Corinne Geer answered the call from Sea Level Hospital and took the ambulance there to
Aelp with the evacuation of patients. Commissioner White helped to handle the phones at
^^e Emergency Management Office in Beaufort and again back at the Town Hall early the
morning after. Commissioner Thompson and the police force were the last to leave and
set up station in the National Guard Armory in Morehead City,
Asked for an evaluation of the entire operation. Civil Preparedness Director
McNally was high in the praise of the citizens of Pine Knoll Shores as well as the area
coordinators and their teams, '^Our people, almost to a man, left the island Thursday
morning in search of safer havens. That is excellent cooperation which allows town
service personnel to evacuate with a clear conscience. Many of the area coordinators
notified residents in their area late Wednesday night giving people an advance warning
and the evacuation was very orderly, "
He added further that the Civil Preparedness Organization at a meeting on
Wednesday, October 2, 1985, reviewed the civil preparedness process which, altogether, went
very well, "However, we need to review our plan and inplementaion of damage assessment.
In addition, we are recommending that a larger portion of the Town evacuate over the high-
rise bridge,"
McNally wishes to express his appreciation to all Pine IQioll Shores residents for
their very excellent cooperation. In addition the hotels cooperated by closing and getting
their guests out.
