MARY I. KANYHA _________ oOo OUR NEW NEIGHBORS Many of you have probably noticed the attractive house at 104 Loblolly Drive that was under construction during the past summer and fall. The house is now a home, with occupants Ruth and Jack Gibson now well-settled in. Long-time vacationers on the beaches of South Carolina, they were told by friends to drive north. Ten years ago they did just that, saw Pine Knoll Shores, bought the property and now at long last....retirement. Jack, while working in Greensboro for Western Electric, was given an assignment in Saudi Arabia while Ruth, who had been with IRS, got a transfer to the Corps of Engineers, so she could be with her husband. In a country where women are considered something less than first-class citizens this placed her in a very special position. The Gibsons, including their younger son who was with them and attended the International School, took advantage of their location and travelled as much as they could, mostly to Greece and Germany during the four years they were in the Middle East. Back home in Greensboro, they picked up where they had left off and started planning the new home here. They have two sons, two daughters, two grandchildren, a dog and a cat. Their younger son now attends ECU. Jack has a 24-foot boat which is presently kept at Radio Island. He looks forwa^^ to using it and hopes to get involved with serious fishing. Ruth has many interests and enjoys crafts, shelling and bowling. The Gibsons would like to become part of the community by doing volunteer service. Pine Knoll Shores welcomes them! YOLA HANAN Ellen and Howard Van Sice moved into their home at 258 Salter Path over the last Labor Day week-end. Before introducing them to you, I would like to repeat sentiments Jacque Lynn expressed recently in one of her interviews. It really is amazing how many talented interesting people move to Pine Knoll Shores! The Van Sices also are "friendly and comfortable to be with, and I hope you will get to know and enjoy them • as I did." After serving as the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Elkton, Maryland for 33 years, Howard retired last July. During those years, he and Ellen raised eight children, but she also found time to teach Sunday School, sing in the church choir, and organize five nurseries for their growing congregation. When the children had grown up, she studied art and is a talented artist. She is busy now fixing up a studio in her new home for craft work as well as painting. They were drawn to our town for a retirement area, as their daughter Becky, is the wife of the Bogue Banks Baptist Church pastor, Allen Schuyler. Their six other daughters are: Esther, married to a Baptist pastor in Northeastern Pennsylvania; Barbara, married to a dentist in Richmond, Virginia; Virginia, married to a Roanoke, Virginia businessman; Judy, married to a Presbyterian minister in Bristol, Tennessee, [they are soon to leave as missionaries to Germany]; Lillian, married to a department manager in a hardware store in Elkton; and Autumn, a junior art major at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Their one son, Howard, is in the construction business building houses in Columbia, Maryland. Thirteen grandchildren complete this remarkable family.
