Before going to college and studying for the Ministry, Howard served in the Navy in World War II and was on the sut^arine "Mingo" for five years in the Southwest Pacific. That must have aroused his desire to travel, for he has been a tour host nine times to the Holy Land and has twice been to India. However, he and Ellen love it here and feel very much at home. They appreciate their unstructured way of life and lack of pressure. But they keep busy in a leisurely way; Howard is even baking all their bread! MARGARET MERCER __________ oOo ---------- ANCIENT MARINERS Although the League missed two weeks of bowling due to the holidays, there have been some very respectable scores turned in. Tops for the month was Bob Herbst with a sizzling 237. There were no new bowlers who broke the 200-pin barrier but there were repeats by both George Broadstreet and Bob Gallo. On the distaff side Libby McCulley [l8l], Millie Herbst [180], Mary Korff [177] and Lib Fleming [176] took highest game honors for the period. As wo approach the mid-way point of the bowling season Millie Herbst's team remains in first place with 32 points and John Knights' team is now in second place with 30 points. However the competition is still wide open with a hide of a lot of pins still to fall and many many points to be won and/or lost between now and April. JACK MORRIS oOo ------- - - PINE KNOLL SHORES LADIES FIRE AUXILIARY ' Auxiliary members are making plans for the Annual Fireman's "Appreciation" dinner to be held in mid-February. Invitations this year are also being extended to members of the Pine Knoll Shores Rescue Sguad to attend as our guests. The main purpose of our small group is to assist our Firemen in any way feasible. Among other things, the Auxiliary gals serve on a monthly rotation basis responding to fire calls with hot or cold drinks, snacks, etc. as the situation requires and are also available to help any fire victims with housing, clothing, food, etc. The Pine Knoll Shores Rescue Squad, in addition to their other duties, also respond and are on hand at every fire. The police are also there. Our Firemen and Rescue Squad are all volunteer residents who spend many hours training and on duty serving each and every one of us in a most essential way. This annual affair is our way of saying "Thank You" to these dedicated people. While the Auxiliary volunteers do all the food preparation and serving, etc., for this occasion, any contribution to help defray expenses would be gratefully appre ciated and should be sent to Auxiliary Treasurer - Lib Fleming, Loblolly Drive, Rt. 3, Pine Knoll Shores, N.
