Hines award for Civic Achievement was awarded the Pine Knoll Shores Garden Club last spring by the North Carolina State Garden Club for their ongoing volun teer help and financial support of the North Carolina Aquarium's indoor plantings. The award is on display for the year at the Aquarium book counter. JOAN DAWSON oGo ANCIENT MARINERS As we suspected, fall weather finally arrived and chilled the air along about time for our Season-Opener in Jacksonville on Monday, October 5. Bowlers who were knocking all sorts of pins over admitted this was good for bowling. Those who were having scrnie early-season problems were heard to comment about how gorgeous this weather was for golf. Well, cheer up, all you folks. As the weeks go by the early low-scorers will certainly come along nicely. And the early high-scorers just might tend to fade a touch. Like the sages so often comment, time will tell. On September 28, a week before Opening-Monday, exactly 70 bowlers and supporters turned out for the Kick-Off Banquet at the Bogue Banks Country Club. Planned and coordi nated by the new League Officers, Saucy Chef, caterers, served a delicious stuffed breast of chicken sit-down dinner with all the fixings. [This writer projected a $10 dinner tab which turned out to be $11. Inflation works in strange ways sorry about that.] Marty Hare our new League President introduced the 1987-1988 officers and committee people. Bob Kent is Vice President. Dot Herbst will be our Secretary again this year while Ellie Long replaces Jack Oakey as treasurer. [Jack has moved to Morehead City so b^^on't be bowling with us this season. He will be missed.] Louise Meyer is Historian, Wallace, Awards Chairperson, and Jack Morris will again cover Publicity. Mary Korff will chair the Nominations Committee and Larry Jerome will continue as the official League Photographer. Mary and Dick Wiker agreed to coordinate the Mid-Season Banquet in January.
