r > Page -2- Ccxtinissioner White reported 204 police calls, 168 house checks, 18 breatholizer tests and 5 traffic accidents covered during August. There were no fires. She further reported that the new fire hydrants and the new water lines on Willow Road will be ccmpleted soon. She stated there had been sane misunderstanding about the hydrants in that scane folks believed that they are owned by the water company [and why should we pay for them?]. This is not so. They are purchased and owned by the TOWN. The police are trying to enforce the beach vehicle restrictions. The vehicles of commercial fishermen only are allowed on the beach and they must have permits for each vehicle. Permits cost $25 and are not transferable. They are obtainable at the Town Hall during the week and from the Police on weekends. The Police do not have access to the beach yet so it is hard to catch violators. All citizens should be alert to this requirement and look for the bright yellow permit which must be displayed. You should take the license of violators and report it to the police. [For now, in order to convict such a person it may be required of you to testify as witness]. Therewere two amendments to the budget ordinance enacted today. One allows overtime for police officers who must attend training on days off. Another allows construction of a radio tower needed for adequate coirmunications. Mayor Hanan introduced several new itans: 1. The waste water disposal study to be conducted by the county is of some concern to Pine Knoll Shores and he recommended a contribution of $500 which was voted. [Total cost will be $15,000.]. 2. The eastern area drainage problem workshop will be held Wednesday evening, October 5th at 7:30 p.m. There will be a formal presentation by the engineering firm contracted to study the problem and also representatives of real estate and insurance compcinies. 3. The water company is requesting the State to allow a 20% increase in rates. This will be the 6th increase since 1979. The Mayor wrote a letter of protest and the water canpany responded that there had not been a hearing date set yet but that the Town would be notified of it. It is also hoped that the hearing will be held locally instead of in Raleigh. 4. A letter was received frcan Admiral Pappas of the Norfolk Naval Base telling of the clean up activities of the Marines he had assigned to remove the debris which^ had washed up on our beaches. The job is now considered done. He asked to be notified if more turns up. The Coitinissioners went into executive session to make appointments to the Town Boards which will experience vacancies at the end of the month. When they returned they announced the following: PLANNING BOARD: Harry Schlimper, Chairman, Lois Jean O'Keefe, A. C. Hall and Joseph Condra. BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT: William Bosse, Luke Hargroves, Lee Hereth and James Smith. COMMUNITY APPEARANCE COMMISSION: Ann Hitch, Audrey Hoffmeyer, Humphrey Odell and Arthur Miller. The North Carolina Symphony needs $22,000 to carry out the proposed four concerts. There is a campaign on to secure sponsors frcxn commercial establishments as well as from patrons. These concerts are an important benefit to this community and you are urged to becane a donor as well as a purchaser of tickets. "A Day for the Symphony" has been set for Tuesday, September 20th. If not contacted on that day call A.C. Hall or Rene Ingram, members of the Board of Directors from Pine Knoll Shores.
