Page -4- You know, too, there is an extinguisher which is especially designed for chimney/flue fires. Once again you may order one through Vern Wallace, 247-4338. If you already have one remember they make great gifts. And ordering in numbers allows you to purchase them for $7.00 each. She sold lots last year and we know of at least one fire immediately extinguished with one of them. _________ oOo DAVIS LANDING GETS FACE LIFT Many thanks are due to the many volunteers [20]! who labored during the morning of September 30th to clean up Pine Knoll Association's Davis Landing Park. Hoot Gibson worked to clear much of the area earlier in the week to prepare for the event. Tangled vines, underbrush and other growth was cut, hauled or burned before noon. Bill Doll and his "Red Truck" made numerous trips to the disposal site. Robert Youngblood donated the use of his big truck. The drive has been cleared and the area opened up. It looks so much better! And there's more raking and trimming to be done at a later date—or by volunteers at their own convenience. Just remember that a permit must be obtained before any burning can be done. „ AUDREY HOFFMEYER _________ oOo OPERATION BEACH SWEEP 1988 Congratulations and thanks to all the volunteers who helped make our Pine Knoll Shores Beach Sweep Program a huge success! Fifty volunteers, mostly residents of Pine Knoll Shores, collected twenty-three bags of trash and "covered the ocean-front" from the Sheraton at Atlantic Beach on the east where our jurisdiction began to Ocean Glen next to Indian Beach where it ended. Our 4^ plus miles of beachfront are the most beautiful in the world and remain that way because of the day-in, day-out efforts of our permanent residents. Last year. Beach Sweep received a National Award in the "Take Pride in America Program." It is a North Carolina coastwide clean-up effort, part of a National program which gains momentum every year. This year eighteen coastal states were involved, next year there will be more. Volunteers record the amount and kind of trash collected in order to determine where it is all coming from and what we can do about it. Pine Knoll Shores participants included a strong representation from our two major Homeowner's Associations, PIKSCO and Pine Knoll Association. We also had friends from Atlantic Beach, two children from Jacksonville, Boy Scout Pack 272 from the Church of the Latter Day Saints in Morehead City and three volunteers from Sanford, North Carolina, guests of Jim and Bobby Ready. A dresser drawer, a rusty chair frame, a "Long Haul" trawler net and a "mystery skele ton" were the most unusual items collected. The skeleton was turned over to the North Carolina Aquarium for identification. This year \ms more organized than last, particularly the eastam part of our jurisdic tion. Next year will be better. Our goal will be to shorten the lengthy distances on the west end between Ocean Glen, Trinity Center to the Iron Steamer Pier. The volunteers who covered that area are veteran walkers from "Turtle-Watch" and have a lot of stamina. Lugging trash makes it a lot more difficult. The area will be broken up into shorter, more manage able, distances. Thanks a million! See you next year! r, MAUREEN PARKER, Zone 8 ________ oOo
