•• •• Page -2- Commissioner Roderick has contracted for the mowing of the right-of-way on Route 58 for which the State will reimburse $1500. It may be possible to contract for pick up of trash as well. He has instituted a NAME YOUR FAVORITE POTHOLE program. If there is a pothole in town streets which you wish repaired, subnit a request to Commissioner Roderick in writing so that when resurfacing is done these holes can be taken care of as well. For another program he is requesting volunteers. On February 24th [or 25th as rain date] there will be a clean-up of the boat parking area behind the town hall. This will require that boat o\mers move their trailers out in the morning [just for the day] to make room. Underbrush etc. will be cleared away and burned under the supervision of the fire department. You do not need to be a boat owner to volunteer for this project. Come one, come all. Refreshments will be served! Sign up now! Commissioner Shedd gave the Planning Board report. The Board had met but business concerned on-going projects such as percentage of impervious materials to be allowed on building lots and the sign ordinance. The Building Inspection report showed 2 new residential permits, 1 commercial permit, 5 miscellaneous permits and 4 certificates of occupancy were issued. As a matter of interest, there are presently 18 buildings under construction right now. Things are picking up! The Rescue Squad had a quiet month—only 3 calls in December! Meanwhile, the defibrilation equipment has been purchased and almost the entire squad has been in training for its use and should be ready to use it before the month is out. Commissioner of Police, Fire and Civil Preparedness, Emily White, reported no fires, 102 police calls, 634 house checks. The police need an ordinance to control surfers around the piers and this was referred to the Planning Board. The Fire Department elected Bob Gallo, Captain,FtankHerbst and David Hasulak lieutenants and their election was confirmed by the Commissioners. Mayor Hanan announced that the Carolina Water Co. wishes to activate a well site near the corner of Oakleaf and Hawthorne. The matter was referred to the Planning Board for study. Also: there will be a traffic light installed at Pine Knoll Boulevard and Salter Path Road before the end of the month. The State has agreed to install a means of control for emergency vehicles needing to enter the highway. The matter of the occupancy tax is still subject to approval. The Mayors of the affected towns have now agreed to the county proposal that 55% of tax collected be allocated to the promotion of tourism, 20% to the County for the Civic Center and 25% to the towns, based on the sales tax allocation. The Commissioners were asked to vote approval of the concept and they did. This is not final, of course, but does represent the agreement of the Towns. The Mayors had met with State representatives and were assured that they would agree to the distribution recommended. The Garden Club asked to use the Town Hall as distribution center for their geranium sale this coming season. This was granted. Commissioner Johnson asked that a letter be sent to tax appraisal authorities asking that they cease to classify Pine Knoll Shores as a resort area but rather as a residential area. REMINDERS: The Town Parks, beaches and other public areas are not there for the convf ience of dog owners! They are for the citizens to enjoy. If you walk your dog in these areas please clean up after them.
