Commissioner Shedd said the Building Inspector had issued 1 residential permit, 1 commercial permit, 11 miscellaneous permits and 1 certificate of occupancy during June. He reported on the activities of the Planning Board [covered below] and presented the Tree Topping and Pruning Ordinance change and the Waterway Ordinance change for adoption as noted on the previous page. Shedd also presented the ordinance change requiring property divided by a street not be cumulative but be independently considered when applying setback, etc. restric tions. Discussion proved that there were areas here which could be detrimental and the desired result could possibly be harmed rather than helped if this change was passed. No action was taken. A clear idea of the intent of the ordinance and new wording by the Town Attorney was needed. A new fee schedule for building permits which increased fees and brings them in line with those of other communities was adopted. It will be effective August 1st. Commissioner Sotir reported 9 emergency and 1 transport call for the Rescue Squad in June. He commended the leadership of Chuck Zaminer as Chief and asked that his re- election by the squad be approved. This was done. The Police and Fire report was given by Mayor Hanan in the absence of Commissioner Gibson. There were 185 police calls and 1 fire call. Mayor Hanan announced that the Corps of Engineers project to dredge in the waterway and replenish the ocean front with the sand therefrom has moved along with the tentative approval of the Bogue Banks Country Club and the Holiday Inn to allow the pipes to cross their properties. Beacons Reach has also asked for some of the sand. If the Corps gets the necessary funding they expect to carry this out in December and January. The drainage project engineers have asked for a new set of easements which would improve the effectiveness of the project and be less costly. The legal ramifications of carrying this out will be studied by Ken Kirkman. Fred Fulcher, Building Inspector, presented to the Commissioners the request of Carteret/Craven Electric Membership Corporation to expand their facility on Pine Knoll Blvd. in order to accomplish the necessary separation from Carolina Power. This amounted to changing the setback in the rear from 30 feet to 5 feet. The commissioners granted the request. Hospice of Carteret County has requested the town to purchase and decorate a tree for their "Festival of Trees" program. It is not possible for the town to do this. However, you are urged to suggest a way that the town might be represented through donations of funds and a central place to display the tree by private citizens or organizations. The Town Hall and the Aquarium do not have the space to accommodate it. This is a worthwhile program and your support is important. Let's have your ideas. The mayor announced that the county would not be able to carry on its recycling program at the Armory any longer. It is planned for containers to be placed throughout the county where people could place their materials at will and they would be picked up once a week. Marge Michael, who has been in charge of the monthly collection here in Pine Knoll Shores asked that the parking lot at the Town Hall be used for this pur pose. When asked to comment, the commissioners were afraid that such bins would be mis-used—particularly by persons outside of Pine Knoll Shores—and the place would be a mess. Furthermore, there is not enough room out there now for all the cars when there is a big meeting. Nevertheless, such a program is desirable and it ivas decided, at the recommendation of Bill Doll, that a committee be appointed to work out a way the town could have its own program which would be controlled. Evan Roderick will chair a committee. Meanwhile the program is on hold.
