A Page -4- OUR NHV NEIGHBORS Matt and Mary Clark are our new neighbors on Loblolly Drive. They moved into their house early in March butwe have known them ever since they purchased their lot so in some ways they do not seem new at all! Nor is this area new to them. They have been coming to their condo in Indian Beach every fall and winter for eight years. Knowing the area so well they picked Pine Knoll Shores when it was time to settle here perman ently. Matt retired from the New York City Police Department a few years ago after twenty- five years on the force. They made their home in Pearl River, N.Y. This is where they raised their four sons. All the family loves the beach so they spent their summers on the ocean on Long island. Once the youngest left home for college they found their Indian Beach place, staying there during school months, and going back for the school holidays and vacations. Mary found that raising the family was a full time job although she did a little real estate selling part time. Of the four boys, two are married and two are not. Two live in Vienna, Va. and two live in New York. All of them like it here on the North Carolina coast and they come as often as they can. But none has been here since they moved into their house and all are in for a treat because the house is lovely. It appears to be built around the furnishings they brought with them. The beach is a big attraction for both Matt and Mary. Matt likes surf fishing. Mary likes to walk the beach. Matt is a golfer and Mary is learning. Both like to bowl. They are hoping the Ancient Mariners will have a place for them in the fall. Mary has many samples of her work with ceramics which she liked to do in New York and which she will take up again here when they are settled. Lots of things are growing outside the house. They have put in a vegetable garden alQrgwith the flowers and shrubs. Now they are waiting to see what the summer is like-^ the only time of year they haven't spent here before. Let's hope it is everything we brag about! We wouldn't want them to be disappointed! M. Korff People who move to Carteret County are inevitably asked how it all happened. Barbara Marks replied very quickly, pointing at her husband, Beal, "Oh, I^ came with him!" Actually, Beal came down here years ago on a 43 foot sloop and docked in Beaufort. He looked around and "saw the sun shining, the blue sky, and those horses on Carrot Island" and said, "This is nice - where ain I?" The next year he came again, and docked in Morehead; that \iras even better. So they moved to Morehead four years ago, and only after a friend. Jack Morris of PKS, reported on what sort of winter weather we have. In December they finished their new home at 129 Hawthorne and moved across the sound to PKS. Beal and Barbara have, between them, 8 kids and almost 9 grandchildren. In Owego, New York, Beal, an engineer, ^an the IBM plant that handles government projects and has an airborne computer lab. Barbara had a wonderfully stimulating job as a legal secretary in the DA's office. Here, Beal is Resident Engineer for Delta Associates, and he supervises the current improvements going on at the Beaufort airport. Barbara started the Newcomers' Club newsletter, has worked v/ith the Christmas Cheer Committee as well as the hospital and Martha's Mission, and still finds time to take golf lessons. Beal is very active in the Crystal Coast RC Club. Members fly model airplanes by radio control; they do it most Saturday mornings at the old landfill site off Hibbs Road near Ne\;port. [That's the highest place in Carteret County!] Barbara's glad she came v^ith Beal, and PKS is glad they both came. M. DOLL
