Page -7- We asked Gayle Finer if this was unusual. She said it was unusual for Pine Knoll Shores but as yet there are not appreciably more this year than other years in the whole •area. Most of them had obviously been dead for a long time before they washed up on our beach. No local phenomena is being held responsible for their demise. LIBRARY DAY BIG SUCCESS Library Day on June 24th was a big success. Visitors at the Open House were served cookies and punch. Over 200 visitors came and many made contributions. Several stores on Bogue Banks were also stations for collection of donations. The total take that day alone was over $2000. In all the Friends of the Library have raised $12,000 of the $40,000 needed to furnish the library. But more than money has been forthcoming. You must have read in the News-Times about Michael Oyela of Management Computer Systems, Inc. who is do nating a computer system for the new library! Campaigners are still at work. Watch the graph in the library as the colors climb the pile of books! That's the easiest way to see how the fund raising is coming along. CIVIL PREPAREDNESS A hurricane emergency preparedness meeting was held on June 21st to inform all new residents of the town to the dangers that these severe weather disturbances cause. Dr. Ned Smith, Director of the NorthCarolina Aquarium presented an interesting and informative hurricane preparedness slide presentation. For those residents who missed the presentation. Pine Knoll Shores will reschedule a second meeting on August 9 depending on the number of people interested. If you are interested in attending you must call the town hall at 247-5353. The NorthCarolina Aquarium has scheduled a hurricarE awareness week August 6-12. During the week the Aquarium will offer films, lectures and slide programs on the area's hurricane history. Hurricareseason began June 1st and extends through November. The six area hurricane coordinators for Pine Knoll Shores are Bill Ford, Russ Burton, Jack Green, Walter Sullivan and new volunteers, Erika Paskman and John Paulsen. We have attached another copy of the hurricane emergency procedures which includes a list of motels for evacuation lodging. Residents are urged to detach and save for future reference. ---------- oOo ------- JULY / AUGUST CALENDAR July 17 Rescue Squad Meeting 7:00 PM July 17 Fire Department 7:00 PM July 19 Fishing Club 3:00 PM July 24 Fire Department 7:00 PM July 26 Planning Board 2:00 PM July 31 Fire Department 7:00 PM August 2 Community Appearance Commission 2:00 PM August 4 Friends of Library Board Meeting 2:00 PM August 8 Board of Commissioners 2:00 PM August 10 Economic Development Council- Water Task Force 7:00 PM August 23 Planning Board 2:00 PM August 25 Ocean Bay Villas Homeowners 1:00 PM Rescue Squad meets First and Third Mondays Fire Department meets every Monday 7:00 PM 7:00 PM
