Conmissioner Sotir reported three calls for the Rescue Squad in November. There are
three new members coming onto the squad at the present time and 2 more in class.
Commissioner Gibson reported 96 calls for the police and 171 house checks. There
were 5 larcenies, 4 embezzlement, and 1 forgery arrests.
The Fire Department has elected Bob Gallo, Captain, Frank Herbst and Ed Phillipson,
Lieutenants. These elections were approved by the Board.
Carolina Water Service had representatives present to answer any questions about its
use of the office in the residential area on Mimosa Blvd., a non-conforming use. Commis
sioners were assured that the use of this office is in compliance since it has not been
physically expanded, merely has seen an increase in staff of two.
When asked about customers paying bills at the office. Commissioners were told that
it was never intended that bills would be paid there. Indeed, some people hcve appeared
with cash and the office staff cannot make change. It was a matter of changing the
P.O. Box Number because of the move of the Atlantic Beach Post Office and the new number
was not available. It now is available and will be given to customers with the mailing
of the next bill. Customers are asked to mail their payments.
Nancy Boyle, owner of one of the properties whose bulkheads were washed out by the
break in the water company's well then made a plea to the commissioners for support in
obtaining the full expense of the repair of the bulkhead and the canal from the company.
Property owners had been told first that the company would take responsibility. Then they
said they would "contribute" about 1/3 of the cost, then 2/3 of the cost.
Mr. Carl Daniels, Regional Manager of the Carolina Water Service in Charlotte, was
present and he committed the company to $13,500 "or whatever it takes" to restore the
conditions of the bulkhead and canal as they were. He was asked to put it in writing and
he said he would.
Mayor Hanan asked the outgoing commissioners, Shedd and Sotir, to come forward. Thei:^^
service to the town was recognized and they were each presented with a gift. Both former
commissioners told those present that they had enjoyed the four years as commissioner and
were glad to have had the opportunity to serve.
Commissioners recently elected were then sworn in by Town Clerk, Corinne Geer. First
Lee Blanchard, then Dave Hasulak and finally Aubrey Johnson. [Alphabetical order]. The
duties of each member of the present board were announced. Aubrey Johnson remains in
charge of finances. Hoot Gibson will continue to be police commissioner, David Hasulak
will be commissioner of Fire, Rescue and Civil Preparedness, and Lee Blanchard will be
in charge of public works.
The commissioners went into executive session to discuss the gift of approximately
5 acres of land between Roosevelt Blvd. and the Town Hall. They returned to pass a reso
lution that the gift of property by the Roosevelt Partnership, Inc. be accepted subject
to two conditions. It will revert to Beacon's Reach if there are regulations or restric
tions forcing its denial and there be no clearing or use of the property for a minimum
of 15 years.
In other business the commissioners accepted the report of the Carteret County Water/
Sewer Task Force presented by Commissioner Sotir and the report on Mutual Aid policy
presented by Commissioner Gibson.
