c Page -4- OUR NEW NEIGHBORS '' John and Essie Carbee, 112 Lagoon Lane, McGinnis Point, have been here for a while. If you haven’t met them yet, you should, as they are a very active and interesting couple. They want to do everything before they get old old! g John, a D.C. native, retired from the Federal Government in 1985. He was a FAA Traffi Controller at Raleigh-Durham Airport and an Investigator-USDA Office of Inspector General, Washington,D. C. His career moved the family from Raleigh, Vermont, Hawaii, Utah, Washington, D.C. and Maine. With time out to raise a family, Essie retired from the Federal Government. Her last position was at the Naval Clinic, Portsmouth Navy Yard, Kittery, Maine. The Carbees are lucky. Their son, two daughters and three grandchildren live in northern Virginia and are able to visit often. Essie is a native of Raleigh and spent many vacations in Atlantic Beach in the late forties. Both Essie and John love the coastal life and enjoy tennis, golf, reading and travel. John volunteers at the Chamber of Commerce, N. C. Aquarium, and teaches in the County Literacy Program. In 1985-86 they served a one year mission for the Mormon Church in Pittsburgh. Get to know the Carbees and if you play tennis with them, remember to hit to Essie's backhand or you will be passed by a wicked forehand. LIB JOHNSON When I ask someone "How did you find Pine Knoll Shores", I get a wide variety of answers, but John Hobart's was truly unique. John had looked from Emerald Isle to Fort Macon without being pleased and was about to leave the island when a worker at the Holiday Inn, where he was staying, asked "Have you looked across the street?" Needless to say, John did not even know Pine Knoll Shores was there and it appeared to be just a tract of woods. Originally from Pottstown, Pa., John later gravitated to Newport News, Va. where he worked as a mortgage banker. There he and his wife reared three children. Eventually they were drawn back to Pennsylvania where they bought an old stone farmhouse and spent the next five years restoring it. Unfortunately, his wife became ill and desired to return to Virginia and after her death, John set out to find a place to retire. His children, and now four grandchildren, were all beach lovers, so a place near the water seemed desirable. He also wanted some thing quiet and secluded, so 105 Yucca Court filled all of the requirements. Already there have been feunily visits, with repeats coming soon. One of John's sons is negotiating for a position in Clinton, N. C. while a second son is in Dallas, so John will be travelling,to visit family as well as hosting their visits here. He enjoys golf and woodworking, along with improving his house. As he has done all of his life, he keeps busy all of the time and enjoys the Pine Knoll Shores way of life. YOLA HANAN _________ oOo --------- O.W.L.S. PATIENT OF THE MONTH; NORTHERN CARDINAL A realtor showing a house in Pine knoll Shores called to report a bird fluttering in the yard, unable to fly. With our guidance, she was able to capture it, put it in a small cardboard box, and bring it to us. Physical exam showed a concussion, which usually means the bird flew into a window. But this female cardinal also had a "mystery injury" a puncture wound through the top of the beak, with stress cracks to the edge of the beak.^^ First things first: she was treated with steroid injections for several days to help cur^p
