After raising her children, Mary was a Supervisor in the Savings Department of a Lancaster bank until 1986. When Bill is not busy now overseeing the painting and decorating of his new home, he hopes to find time to play tennis. They both like to play bridge and walk on the beach, and Mary is taking up sewing again and enjoying her new sewing machine. She is also interested in many dif ferent forms of needlework. The December snow storm was not a big incentive for the Millers to leave Pennsylvania permanently, but we hope they will soon make North Carolina their year round home. MARGARET MERCER PINE KNOLL SHORES WOMEN'S CLUB The monthly meeting of the Pine Knoll Shores Women's Club will be held at the Town Hall on Friday, February 23, 1990. Social hour will be at 9:30 a.m. with a business meeting at 10:00 and following this, Rodney Kemp will speak about "Carteret County Tales and Legends." Mr. Kemp was born in Tennessee, raised in Morehead City and is a former history teacher at West Carteret High School. With so many of us from out of State or from other parts of North Carolina, this will be a marvelous opportunity to learn more about Carteret County. Hope to see you there — and bring your visitors too! PAT NELSON PINE KNOLL SHORES GARDEN CLUB T\ro new members were welcomed to the PKS Garden Club at the February meeting. After a short business meeting a Mystery trip was taken to the Munden Nursery in Williston. Bill Newman showed the members the "how to" of nursery growing. Later, a delicious lunch was served at the Sea Level Inn. Our club has tickets available for the Sea Shore Council sponsored program on flower arranging at the Civic Center on March 28. Tickets are $6.00 each. Judy Bridges from Napersville, 111., will present the program entitled, "Simple Mechanics of Floral Arranging". Mark your calendar for April 21 — 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — at Town Hall for our Geranium and Caladium pick-up day! Our grower set the date as ideal for soil temperatures in our area. Geraniums are red, white, salmon, pink and fuschia. Caladiums are red, white and pink. All plants are in 4" pots and will sell for $1.25 each. Call Lois Jean O'Keefe 247-4100 or Bobby Ready 726-1048 or any Garden Club member to place your order. ELSA WENZEL DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION "The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution" observes February as Ameri can History Month each year. The Carteret Chapter, DAR encourages everyone to learn more about the men and women who have helped develop this great country. In conjunction with this observance, the Carteret Chapter conducts an American History Essay Contest in Grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 in public, private, and parochial schools. We salute our winners this year: Brandon Douglas Burch, Morehead City; Donovan Willis, Harkers Island; and Jared Best, Harkers Island, O.W.L.S. PATIENT OF THE MONTIi: NORTHERN GANNET If we hear of a gannet being seen on land, we know immediately that it is in trouble. These pelagic [ocean-living] birds never com.e ashore in our area, but live far out on the ocean, diving 50 feet or more for fish. So, when Vicky Thayer of NOAA brought us a gannet,^ we immediately looked for problems... and found them! The bird was emaciated and covered with a clear, petroleum-like oil. Since he was alert and stable, he was bathed right away in Dawn dishwashing detergent to remove the oil, and placed on a heating pad [under a
