COMMISSIONERS MEET
Under an azure blue Carolina sky that hinted at the coming of summer, the Commis
sioners held their April monthly meeting at Town Hall on Tuesday, April 10- Major
items discussed were the receipt of bids for the drainage system project, beach sand
replenishment status, highway mileage marker placements, and the town's opposition
to a third bridge from the mainland to Pine Knoll ihores.
Commissioner Blanchard requested the Board approve the option to allow the Town
to mow the grass along Highway 58. The Town will receive $1500. from the DOT for the
contract. Blanchard also reported that garbage will not be picked up on April 15,
Easter Monday, but picked up on Tuesday, April 17. In addition, April 26 has been
•designated for the collection of all heavy trash. Blanchard wished to commend the Garden
Club for their beautification project at Oakleaf Drive and Highway 58.
Commissioner Gibson reported on the total of 159 calls the Police Department
responded to in March.
Commissioner Hasulak noted that there were no fire calls in March, that the Rescue
Squad is up to staff levels and that anyone interested in volunteering for the Fire
Department will be welcome. Charles Romine was approved as the new Director of the
Civil Preparedness Program replacing Marty Kiel. The recently acquired four-wheel
drive vehicle is being outfitted and that the cots and blankets sent to South Carolina
in the wake of Hurricane Hugo have been replaced.
Commissioner Roderick reported that the planning Board turned down the request
of the Bogue Banks Country Club for exclusion from the tree removal ordinance.
Commissioner Johnson noted that revenues collected for March were $48,600 or 90%
of budget and distributions amounted to $70,100 or 59% of expenditures.
Mayor Hanan reported on the three bids that were received for the work to be per
formed on the drainage system project. Bids were in the amounts of $145,000, $142,000
and $117,000. The lowest bid did not include a performance bond. These bids will be
