Following the hearing, the Commissioners held their monthly meeting.
rnmmissioner Blanchard reported that the azaleas donated by the Garden
Club have been planted.
Commissioner Gibson reported 93 police calls answered, 130 house
checks, 10 traffic citations and 3 larcenies. Officers Baxley, McAllister
and Macklin had attended 32 hours of training. Mayor Hanan then presented
Officer Hamilton the Certificate qualifying him to be a teacher of basic
law enforcement training to other officers.
CoTmnissioner Hasulak reported 3 rescue calls, 1 transport and no
fires in October. He presented the slate of officers for the Fire
Department chosen by the members but requiring commissioner's approval.
They are: Captain—Andy Turney, Lieutenants—Frank Herbst and Hank Ingram.
They were approved. Hasulak was also given authorization to donate the
used fire hose, which was recently replaced, to the Stella Fire Dept.
Commissioner Johnson reported that 36.9% of revenues have been
collected and 25.67% of expenditures disbursed so far in this fiscal year.
Earnings on investments averaged 7.9%. Since the annual audit was not
ready for this meeting, Johnson requested a special meeting to be held _
Tuesday, 11/20, at 3:00 p.m. for that purpose. This was granted.
Commissioner Roderick reported that the Building Inspector had issued
one residential permit, 13 miscellaneous permits and 4 certificates of
occupancy. He said that the Planning Board did not approve preliminary
plans for Bermuda Greens as reported in the October Shoreline. Their
request for approval was turned down at the October meeting. They also
recommended that the Ocean Front Pruning Ordinance not be changed. The
Community Appearance Commission had reported 18 inspections in September.
Roderick presented th6 sign ordinance changes for approval. The
recommended changes allowing up to 5 temporary signs for Open House and
Yard Sales, and requiring them to be placed parallel to the street just as
other signs were, and allowing the Town to have these signs made and to
issue them upon request for permit. A deposit will be charged which will
be refundable upon return of the signs.
After the reports, the Mayor moved to new business. He reported that
White Brothers, contractor engaged to construct the drainage swales to
relieve flooding in the eastern part of town, had requested extension of
its contract. It was decided to hear the petition from the citizens to be
presented by Clyde Lynn regarding their objections to this project before
a decision was made. There was lengthy discussion from the floor when
this was presented. It was ultimately decided that the contract would not
be extended for at least six months to give a special committee the
opportunity to come up with an alternate solution to the flooding problem.
If a suitable one has not been found in that time, the contract will be
renegotiated. Many volunteers for this committee came forward.
