SPECIAL MEETING
A special meeting of the Board of Commissioners was held on
February 21, as previously announced. The first order of business was
to appoint two trustees to the Bogus Banks library Board to represent
the town. Commissioners named Caroline Roderick and Do^ig Fleming for those
duties.
The main purpose of the meeting was to consider the report of the Ad
Hoc Committee set up to study alternate means of solving |;he drainage pro
blem in the eastern side of town. Committee members are; Carl Heffel-
finger, Chair; Cliff Mitchell, John Cronk, Ken Hoffmeyer, Pete Peterson
and Clark Hutchinson. Dave Hasulak represents the Board. All memtaers
were present. In addition to the commissioners and interested citizens,
Engineer Paul Denison of Von Oesen and Associates, authors of the previously
approved plan, was present.
The recommendation of the committee is that flood water be pumped
to the ocean front where it would be sprayed over the dunes. Col.Denison
said that such a plan had been consi(;)ered when his firm rnede its study and
it was rejected because of the high cost and the difficulties of obtaining
easements.
The committee feels that the maintenance cost of the swale plan would
be greater than that of this plan. Also, the proparty ownors* associations
have been approached and have indicated a willingness to consider the possi
bility of allowing sections of their ocean front property to be used for
this purpose. This, of course, would be a big saving but the prospect must
be studied to make sure that the area offered is large qnopgh to handle the
discharge without damage to the dunes.
After considerable dispussion it was deqided to request Von Oesen
Associates to estimate the cost of a feasibility study in time for the
Commissioners' March meeting.
